Logging and drilling in the Swan Hills region leaves a dramatic footprint on the boreal forests of central Alberta. The new Timelapse project by Google allows anyone with an internet connection and modern computer to easily see three decades of earth observation satellite imagery from the Landsat program. This new tools allows anyone to observer changes on our planet through an interface as simple as a google map. Visit www.world.time.com/timelapse, click "Explore the World" and search anywhere in the world for places that interest you. Find something amazing? Let us know! Note: Currently, the "Explore the World" feature does not work in Safari - However it is functional in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome and Opera. Thanks to Google and USGS for their work on this collaborative project that will revolutionize our view of the planet and its changing landscape. Also thanks to NASA for audio recordings of the Apollo launch, Sputnik, and the artistic rendering of Landsat 8.

Initiated in 1972, the Landsat Data Continuity Mission is a collaborative venture between NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, and is the most extensive continuous record of changes on the Earth's surface. The images generated from Landsat contribute to such NASA research as fluctuations in weather and climate, ecosystems, and the water and carbon cycles. Landsat also allows for study of local and regional land use, disaster response and evaluation, water use, human health and society, national and global economics, resource management, and carbon cycling and sequestration among other observations. This 3D visualization of the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) Satellite is a test to experiment with recreating the materials of the satellite in a digital space. These animations will eventually serve to exemplify the satellite's location and function as it orbits Earth. Modeled, textured and animated by Rachel Kreutzinger.

April 29, 2009, marked the tenth anniversary of the launch of NASA's Earth Observatory. For the last decade, the Earth Observatory has been using the stunning images and data provided by NASA satellites to tell the story of our planet and the scientists who are working to help us understand it. For more information: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/news/topstory/2008/chesapeake.html From the distant reaches of the Universe, to black holes, and the Martian surface, NASA explores some of the most far out parts of space. But NASA also does research much closer to home. In fact, NASA Earth Science satellites are taking part in the management and recovery of an ecosystem right in our backyard, the Chesapeake Bay. By studying the landscape around the Chesapeake Bay, NASA spacecraft are helping land managers figure out how to battle the harmful pollutants that have added to the destruction of the bay's once legendary productivity.
