Vector-borne diseases are infectious diseases spread by intermediate organisms, such as insects and snails that transmit viruses, parasites, and bacteria to humans. These diseases cause a high burden of illness and death for individuals, their families, and communities, especially in poorer countries; they lead to school absenteeism, worsening of poverty, a negative impact on the economic productivity, high health costs and overloaded health systems in countries. Vector-borne diseases exercising significant impact in the Americas are mainly malaria, dengue, Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, and trachoma. Vector-borne diseases is the theme for World Health Day 2014 which is celebrated every 7th of April.

Along with Chagas disease and sleeping sickness, kala azar is one of the most dangerous neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) – after malaria, it is the second largest parasitic killer in the world. Kala azar is endemic in 47 countries with approximately 200 million people at risk of infection. The parasite is spread to humans by bites from infected female sand flies. It attacks the immune system, and is almost always fatal if not treated. Find out more here: http://www.msf.org.uk/kalaazar.focus

Better tests are urgently needed for visceral leishmaniasis (VL), which causes more deaths per year than any parasitic disease except malaria. We propose a unique non-invasive test that (i) addresses key gaps in current diagnostic capabilities and (ii) has the potential to be scaled-up using an electricity-free platform.

Universidad de Antioquia. www.bimana.org www.alejandrovalenciat.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- Lutzomyia: Large-format sculpture A giant Lutzomyia is lurking around! This insect is the responsible of the leishmaniasis transmission (www.leishmaniosisysociedad.blogspot.com). It is common to find scientists using a microscope in order to analyze it, but farmers and people that live in countryside have a permanent contact with this insect, therefore they have the greatest risk. However, in cities, how can we promote conscience about this problem? Can we call the attention of the common people by using art? This sculpture was made to produce a metaphoric reinterpretation of the Lutzomyia insect. The main objective is to generate alternatives tools for the education in tropical diseases issues.
