https://www.tilt.com/tilts/help-asan-bring-acceptance-to-public-libraries If you search for autism-related books at a public library today, you will be hard-pressed to find even one written by an Autistic writer, expounding the value of neurodiversity and celebrating Autistic culture. Instead, the dominant message comes from the medical field, promoting the best ways of stamping out the wonderful traits that make us, us. In a better world, those medical books wouldn't even exist, but by at least providing the opposing view, we can shift the culture surrounding autism in the direction of acceptance. Our goals with this project are to create inclusive friends, supportive parents, effective teachers, and self-love among Autistic people. The Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Southern California is raising $2,000 to bring REAL autism resources into public libraries. We will accomplish this by obtaining a total of 27 books almost exclusively by Autistic authors, ranging from practical guides to Autistic poetry, to essay collections, to children's books that assume autistic children might read them. Nothing About Us, Without Us! This project is supported by a matching grant from the Pacific Alliance on Disability Self Advocacy. That means whatever you donate is DOUBLED up to $2,000! The Autistic Self Advocacy Network is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to advocacy by and for Autistic people. ASAN seeks to advance the principles of the disability rights movement with a focus on autism. ASAN believes that the goal of autism advocacy should be a world in which Autistic people enjoy the same access, rights, and opportunities as all other citizens, NOT a world without autism. ASAN’s members and supporters include Autistic adults and youth, cross-disability advocates, and non-autistic family members, professionals, educators and friends.
