Jennifer Bradbury’s story has a familiar ring…. “I was a complete couch potato. I was 267 pounds and I had heath problems, hypertension, sleep apnea, atrial fibrillation,” says Bradbury. What sets Jennifer Bradbury apart is that she transformed her body and her life. “I know this sounds cliché but if I can do it, anybody can,” says Bradbury. She didn’t go it alone. Jennifer used a team of coaches to help her get off the couch. “The key is having that successful support system and also getting the right information,” says dietician Carrie Bloemers. Bloemers is a dietitian with Lee Memorial Health System’s Community Weight Management Program; a combination of life coaching, workouts and nutrition sessions. “It can take a long time and even though it takes longer doesn't mean it’s not as good or a failure, it actually will mean better results long-term,” says Bloemers. One of the biggest pitfalls is following the fads. Studies show the old-school methods of proper diet and exercise are worth their weight in gold. Lee Memorial Health System Lifestyle Coach Sarah Mitchell helped Jennifer along the way. “For the first thirty minutes we’re actually physically moving together,” says Mitchell. Over an eight-week span, people get the life lessons they need to reshape their habits. “Tools to take with them so that they can continue these healthy habits wherever they are, and make it a lifestyle change for a lifetime,” says Mitchell. Jennifer’s journey started in 2008. “Literally from getting off of the couch, I started walking on the treadmill,” says Bradbury. She met her goal weight 2 years later. Today she is a marathon runner, still leaving pounds behind. “My largest size jeans are a size 26 and now I’m in a 2 or a 4,” says Bradbury. Dropping a total of 140 pounds, Jennifer lost more than half her body weight and regained her self-esteem. We hear it all the time, the number of joint replacement surgeries is sky-rocketing. But here’s something you may not have heard: people may be unknowingly contributing to their own joint breakdown. “Osteoarthritis is an epidemic in this country and it’s being diagnosed earlier and earlier,” says Dr. Charles Springer, an orthopedic surgeon on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. “The treatment from a medical standpoint has gotten much more expensive as result and part of that is attributed to obesity.” It’s widely accepted that obesity increases the risk of osteoarthritis, which is the leading cause of joint replacement surgery. “Given that over 50% of my patient population has to deal with osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, shoulder. Patients will come in and they’ll want to get back to a normal pre-injury level where there’s no pain, no range of motion and with no restrictions in their activity. However, a lot of times I’ll have to have a conversation regarding patients weight because that is a direct effect,” says Dr. Springer. It’s a weighty issue for doctors to take up with patients. No one likes to be told they need to drop pounds. So it becomes an education process; explaining how the heavy load hurts their joints. “The easiest way to describe it is that it’s an abnormal or overload to the articular cartilage and articular cartilage serves as a cushioning between the bones. And what happens is when you overload the system cartilage wears thin,” Dr. Springer says. Joint replacement is one fix, but excess pounds may continue to weigh down a patient’s recovery. In the long run, it’s recommended that surgery be used to kick-start a change in lifestyle. Hypertension. As health conditions go it is often misunderstood. Because it doesn’t make you feel bad, people tend to overlook its seriousness. “Hypertension is often known as the silent killer because most patients have no symptoms at all,” says Dr. Gary Goforth, who is a family practice physician with Lee Memorial Health System. Doctors take hypertension very serious. It can be fatal, leading to heart attack and stroke. But you can take steps to control your blood pressure. First-be informed. Pay attention to your numbers. “True hypertension is when the blood pressure is consistently 140/90. There’s a term called pre-hypertension when the systolic pressure, the high number is between 121 and 139 and when the diastolic pressure, the lower number, is between 80 and 89,” says Dr. Goforth. These numbers serve as notice that it’s time to change. Step two: look at your lifestyle. “Asking patients to lose weight, reduce salt in their diet, reduce alcohol intake - all things that are very effective in lowering blood pressure and preventing them from needing medicines,” Dr. Goforth says. Step three may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s not. Getting blood pressure under control may require medication. If your doctor advises it, it’s important patients to stick to the program. “When they’ve got severe or stage two hypertension then we generally will start with at least two drugs and add to that to control pressure. However, if they make major lifestyle changes it’s possible that they lower their blood pressure and they get off medicine,” says Dr. Goforth. Generally speaking, hypertension is a lifelong illness. But following these steps helps you control the disease. So it doesn’t control you.
