'Interruptions' is a series of guerrilla-Esq series of pop up performances on the Montrose medians between Westheimer rd. and West Grey rd. during rush hour traffic. The first installment of the Interruptions series began on August 21 at 5:00 PM on the median of Montrose Blvd and Peden St. by experimental Opera singer and artist Lisa E. Harris and artist Alisha Wormsley. Their performance entitled "Slaves and Indians" saw Lisa E. Harris singing opera live on the radio in a dress-like sculpture made up of a left-over section of the FUNNEL TUNNEL by Alisha Wormsley. According to the City of Houston, 37,000 cars pass by Art league on a daily basis and due to traffic volumes, the road transforms into a temporary parking lot between the hours of 4:30 – 6:00 PM. This series functions as a way of creatively ‘interrupting’ the average Houstonian's banal car commute to work or home. According to an annual study from Texas A&M transportation institute researchers, the average Houstonian wastes more than two days a year on average in traffic congestion. Watch out for more pop up performances on the Montrose Blvd. medians!!! This project will not be advertised publicly.

CLOWN AND DRAGON created by Lisa E. Harris for Studio Enertia Whimsy. pageantry. serious fun is slowly dying from our communities and we want it back. Clown and Dragon researches the ritual of procession and parade, not only as a means to communally mourn (Second Line) but also as a process to usher in new energy, new time and new space. Clown and Dragon are ceremonial archetypes attached to circus, parade, fun and also humors, duality, ethnic stereotype and status. This particular 2-person procession was inspired by the newly gentrified, half-salvaged, half-abandoned New Orleans neighborhood, St. Roch. We activated the clown costume and dragon puppet with a short parade around the block in the spirit of Chinese New Year and Mardi Gras performances. The desire was to invoke public participation in this geographically familiar ritual that was staged outside of the time and space parameters of organized parades, i.e. Mardi Gras, MLK parades, Thanksgiving /Christmas Parades, etc. We wanted this midday, spontaneous procession to allow the viewer to engage in collective pageantry, remember mythology and use this unsanctioned celebratory, festive activity as an act of resistance. With this project we hope to study the influence of parade and procession globally. We hope to incite fun as well as the release of grief in the structure of public performance and interaction. We intend to find people all around the world in search of serious fun; communities that are willing to join behind us two women in a beautiful protest for Joy. We will film/digitally archive the parades and the followers, compiling the media to make a book, film and other sharable media that will further liberate the spirit of Serious Fun.
