A curious exploration of the power of public space, urban design, and finding yourself in a city. In this documentary, a young Australian woman discovers Melbourne’s quirky public spaces through the narration of a designer who helped transform them from a dying wasteland into vibrant places for people. Shot in 2014 with the generosity of my new ‘mates' and city designers, it reflects my own sense of self-discovery when I first wandered Melbourne’s laneways. Prior to this I’d become sort of disillusioned in my own relationship with filmmaking, but Melbourne inspired me to chase that sweet spot between information and emotion by combining an urban design tour with a "sense of place" meditation. I hope that people who watch this get excited about creating cities that are dynamic, creative and inviting to anyone. Please share with people that you think need to see it! Independently funded and totally non-commercial :) Please contribute your thoughts! https://www.facebook.com/cerebralcity directed, shot and edited by JOHN MOODY moodyfilm.com original music by ANDREW TUTTLE www.andrewtuttle.com.au featuring IAN DRYDEN ALEXANDRIA DRUMMOND DARON DEONIER WHITNEY ANDERSON ROB ADAMS sound design by NOAH WOODBURN technical advisors ROS RHYMER JACK O’CONNOR very special thanks to CAMPBELL DRAKE DARON DEONIER BRYCE KAVANAGH DAVID KAVANAGH SAMANTHA CLARKE NICK MARRIOTT ERIC SHEFFIELD special thanks to RUSS ALSOBROOK, A.S.C. In this webinar, Mike Lydon with fellow urban experts Valerie Watson and Alexandros Washburn, identify short-term, community-based projects that are powerful and adaptable new tools for urban activists, planners, and policy-makers seeking to drive lasting improvements in their cities and beyond. Quick, often low-cost and creative projects, such as pop-ups parks and open street initiatives, are the essence of the tactical urbanism movement. Tactical Urbanism, published by Island Press written by Mike Lydon and Anthony Garcia, two founders of the movement, promises to be the foundational guide for urban transformation. The authors begin with an in-depth history of the Tactical Urbanism movement and its place among other social, political, and urban planning trends. A detailed set of case studies, from guerilla wayfinding signs in Raleigh, to pavement transformed into parks in San Francisco, to a street art campaign leading to a new streetcar line in El Paso, demonstrate the breadth and scalability of tactical urbanism interventions. Finally, the book provides a detailed toolkit for conceiving, planning, and carrying out projects, including how to adapt them based on local needs and challenges.

Millions of people choose to relocate to new cities each year. Now, more than ever, they are doing so before finding work in the area they are relocating to. Instead, they are seeking a particular lifestyle and researching the livable qualities of a community while comparing them against their other options. Companies then relocate or open new offices where the talent lives. To these ends, cities have to get the word out about themselves, telling prospective residents what makes them special and why they are a great place to live. Livability.com is the perfect venue for these connections to happen. Millions of people search our site each year to find the best cities in the U.S., and if you're not part of it – and not telling your own story – those people may not be able to find you. As we prepare to launch our new site in the summer of 2014, we are partnering with individual cities to help them craft compelling content about themselves so people are able to see what it is really like to live, work and play in their communities.

You have probably seen your share of literature, policies, studies, statistics, etc. related to complete streets and share the road campaigns, but you've likely never heard a song about the subject matter. "This Lane was Made for You and Me" is about to change that! This entertaining song is told from a bicyclist's perspective about their experiences sharing the road with motorists. The video portraits raw images of real life cyclists sharing roads in all 50 states. On 25 August 2013 a bunch of people got together to discuss how they could change a local a street - to make it greener, safer, and more human. It was fun, uplifting and inspiring to see how much enthusiasm there is amongst the community to improve the environment that's right outside our front doors. This is a sweet 2 minute vignette of the day. Two months later we make it happen - an actual demonstration of a "liveable street" on Clovelly Road. Come along! And if you're interested, get involved. The Better Block event is 27 October 2013.
