September 6, 2011 ~ St. Paul's Chapel (New York, New York) http://onbeing.org/programs/2011/ccp-911/ In the days and months after 9/11, St. Paul's Chapel became the hub where thousands of volunteers and rescue workers received round-the-clock care. It was a moving setting to explore how 9/11 changed us as a people — and to ponder the inward work of living with enduring grief and unfolding understanding. From a live conversation at the edge of Ground Zero, The New Yorker's Hendrik Hertzberg, journalist and novelist Pankaj Mishra, and theologian Serene Jones.

January 19, 2011 ~ Minnesota Public Radio, UBS Forum (Saint Paul, MN) Krista Tippett led an an interactive conversation with a live audience — in house and online — a new approach to asking how we build a common life, even while holding deep disagreements on difficult issues. People brought their questions and intentions to create new ways of being, new ways of living together even while holding passionate disagreement. This event builds on our ongoing series, "The Civil Conversations Project." This series is mining new vocabularies, lived virtues, and unexplored lessons from some of our most intractable contemporary debates, from gay marriage to abortion.

http://www.onbeing.org/ccp-future-marriage October 10, 2012 ~ Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota Redefining the definition of marriage is a monumental cultural transition. But we’ve reduced our public deliberation of this matter – even inside our religious institutions – to a matter of votes and laws. The reality is, even one-third of Democrats still express opposition to gay marriage. But younger people of every political and moral persuasion are coming to a collective comfort level and consensus. Jonathan Rauch is a gay man and gay marriage advocate who respects the values and concerns of social conservatives and wants them taken seriously. David Blankenhorn is a self-identified liberal democrat and long time family and marriage advocate, who testified for gay marriage opponents during California’s Prop. 8 ballot initiative. But he has recently withdrawn his legal opposition to gay marriage, acknowledging the emerging moral consensus. They have developed a friendship that has surprised and changed them both. We’ll listen in on their common struggle to respond compassionately to both sides of our human and civilizational encounter with same sex union, and to discuss it in terms of civil society and a pro-family agenda.

http://onbeing.org/ccp September 12, 2012 ~ Cowles Auditorium, Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN) As part of The Civil Conversations Project, Krista Tippett speaks with Jim Daly and Gabe Lyons. They are emerging figures of authority in important spheres of American Christianity that fall under the radar, especially in poll-oriented political seasons. They represent the diversity within American Evangelicalism that is lost in coverage of Christian voters and candidates, and the way this significant swath of American religiosity continues to evolve. Gabe Lyons is a voice for a new generation, and a new key, of evangelical: alienated by the strident public Christianity of recent decades, and committed to finding ways for Christian conviction to have a robust and constructive place in the pluralistic culture of the 21st century. Jim Daly shares this concern, even as he represents the legacy of Focus on the Family, one of the most publicly influential conservative “moral values” organizations of recent decades. He succeeded James Dobson as president of that organization.
