It's summer time here and with that brings a multitude of different species of lizards into our back yard, from small geckos (which I love - so cute!) to the bigger blue tongues and bob tail lizards. (Shinglebacks) Unfortunately some of them wander in and fall victim to my curious dogs or fall in the swimming pool, so whenever we can we try to rescue them and put them in the bush across the road. Today we had two successful rescues - a fiesty bobtail and a gecko who bit the facecloth and wouldn't let go! (He disappeared later so hopefully he will be ok.) We have a large black racehorse goanna that lives in/on our roof. He was also around today making a racket up there. Sounds more like a crocodile than a lizard sometimes! I don't mind the lizards, but recently there was a snake in our house....under my chair! I was screaming too much at the time to think to grab the video camera :)

The Mount Meru, or dwarf, Jackson's chameleon (Trioceros jacksonii merumontanus) is a relatively small species of arboreal lizard endemic to the Tanzanian volcano located west of Mount Kilimanjaro. These high-altitude forest dwellers are one of three (currently) recognized subspecies of the Jackson's chameleon-- the other two occurring in Kenya-- and are also the smallest of the three subspecies. Females possess a single rostral horn while the males sport an impressive set of three, annulated horns, which they use, in part, to defend their territory. Shot with a Canon EOS 7D and a Canon, 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Music by Alexandre Desplat.

See Spanish Version Here: https://vimeo.com/74840204 | WINNER of the 2011 NESCent Evolution Film Festival | Small island environments can be unforgiving, and their inhabitants have evolved extraordinary adaptations to survive the harsh conditions of island life. Mediterranean island lizards have evolved the ability to drink nectar, and eat flowers and fruits. This adaptation not only allows them to survive in harsh island environments, but their interactions with plants have forever changed these island ecosystems. However, this isn't the only dietary adaptation of island lizards… "Cold-blooded Cannibals" -- filmed, written, and edited by Nathan Dappen & Joris van Alphen; narrated by John Astbury -- illustrates the amazing adaptations of these remarkable reptiles. Produced by Days Edge Productions (www.daysedgeproductions.com) & Joris van Alphen photography (www.jorisvanalphen.com). Filming assistance from Ryan McMinds, Hannah Peck & Marina Knize. Filmed on a Canon 5D Mark II and Canon Rebel T3i. UPDATE 6/26/2011: Cold-blooded Cannibals won the NESCent Evolution Film Festival! A summer visit to the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden. In summer, following a dry Winter, the low deserts of Arizona present very muted colors. This, and harsh sun can result in less than interesting images. This project is an attempt to use the "Picture Adjust" settings of the Panasonic HDC-TM700 to improve color, exposure and white balance for these conditions. A Panasonic GH2 version is here: https://vimeo.com/47428035 Panasonic HDC-TM700 Polarizer Gitzo GT0531 tripod and G2180 fluid head White Balance for sun Picture Adjust settings - Sharpness +1 - Color +3 - Exposure -3 - WB Adjust +1 to Red

During our month-long expedition to photograph the Ibiza wall lizard, we took thousands of photos on dozens of islands. Lizard color often differed dramatically from one island to the next, even when islands were only 10 meters apart! We wanted to capture that diversity photographically. In this final video update, we show you how we managed to document that diversity, and wrap-up what has been an incredible month of photography and adventure. Film by Neil Losin and Nate Dappen, with additional photography by Amanda Miesnieks, Liz Losin, and Joris van Alphen (jorisvanalphen.com) Music by SJ - "Almost Good Enough" & "I Am" on the album Coffee (sjacoustic.com); and the FCP library.
