http://www.british-longboard-union.co.uk/ http://stablepizza.com/locations/the-stable-fistral-beach/ http://airbornevisionltd.com/ BLU/Stable Fistral Longboard Classic 2015 event report, by R.Unsworth With a new sponsor the 4th event on the British Longboard Union calendar moved to Fistral Beach in Newquay. ‘The Stable’ pizza restaurant pulled out all the stops making Fistral Beach the perfect venue to host the final competition of the year. Under cloudless skies and 2-3ft offshore conditions the first rounds got under way in the Open, Ladies and Masters divisions. With the smaller conditions some opted to ride performance boards while other preferred to break out the logs. So with both longboard styles on show the judges had their work cut out for them. With the new event came some new competitors. Some having not competed for a few years and some for the first time but it was especially good to see the Jersey contingent back in the mix posting high scores and progressing through the rounds. As the forecast for the following day began to look more and more marginal it was decided to try to run the Open in one day, along with the Under 18 Girls and U16 Cadets. In the Under 18 Girls final Emily Currie, fresh back from the Europeans in Morocco, dominated taking the win ahead of Beth Leighfield, Josie Pearce and Anya Burley. Jordan Zervas posted the highest scores giving him the win in the Under 16 Cadets finals ahead of Tom Horn, Beth Leighfield, Rhys Burton and Joe Hornbuckle. The Open final was then put on hold until the tide dropped back and spectators were then treated to but can only be described as High Tide Swell Board Carnage ! The Open Final then got under way. Ben Skinner set his stall out early with two back to back scores on the right over by the rocks as the other competitors were further down the beach. Ben Haworth then came over to the right and proceeded to get barrelled on his log, also much to the delight of the spectators while Connor Griffiths and Sam Bleakley contented themselves over on the left. After 25 minutes of wave for wave tit for tat Ben Skinner took the nod with Ben Haworth in 2nd, Connor Griffiths in 3rd and Sam Bleakley in 4th. Fistral Beach always proves to be a great venue for spectators and with music and commentary of the surfing provided by The Stable this ensured all who watched got involved in the action http://stablepizza.com/locations/the-stable-fistral-beach/ http://airbornevisionltd.com/

        • Worm Dreams Big: A Tribute to the Benevolent Bad-asses of the Women’s Longboarding Community

          from SeaLevelTV Added

Erin “Worm” Ashley’s has a big dream: raise awareness about the importance of early breast cancer detection by partnering with The Keep A Breast Foundation and throwing a good, old fashioned style surf contest with the best women longboarders in the world at First Point, Malibu, California. Worm, professional logger and aloha gladiator, has a truly unique vision that run counter to the high-pressure, stress-inducing, modern surf contest rules. She believes (and proves) that rewarding surfers for skillfully sharing waves is the perfect recipe for celebration and revelry. Worm’s states, “Share in the good times, thow[ing] down zero bad vibes...that’s what I’m trying to maximize”. “We haven’t gone so far as to call it a contest. We’re more hanging out, having a good surf. One of the things we miss is...sharing a wave together...it takes a lot of the contest out of contest. Showcasing women’s longboarding...is an epic thing. But to be able to do it for an incredibly rad cause is more important.” “My big picture at the beginning had nothing to do with the the surfing aspect...I wanted Keep A Breast to be a part of it. Shaney Jo [Darden, Co-Founder, Keep A Breast] is this amazingly compassionate human being. I wanted to be more actively good as a human as less passively good” Women's surfing has a long-standing, ardent history with The Keep A Breast Foundation according to co-founder, Shaney Jo Darden, going back more than fifteen years. So it was not by change that Worm’s dream concept fit flawlessly with Keep A Breast’s inspired, remarkable time-honored activism focused on the benfits of regular breast exams and early detection.

"Simpson brings to mind a long history in the Northwest forest industry and for rail enthusiasts a long loved logging railroad. Inside this pictorial Joel Hawthorn captures a fantastic retrospective of the last years of operations of the Simpson Lumber Company’s railroad in Shelton, WA. These years were not the Simpson’s heydays however they are an important chapter in the life of the railroad and their documentation demonstrates the enthusiasm rail fans have for operations like the Simpson. As a resident of Shelton, Joel spent many hours in and around the railroad and train crews. His special relationship with Simpson railroaders gained him access to interesting parts of the railroad that went unseen by many. His unique perspective gives light the last breaths of the Simpson." -Steve Eshom, Vancouver, WA

                  • Wayne Crowley vs. TimberWest

                    from Ramshackle Pictures Added 1,059 0 0

Beginning in 2006, following clear-cutting in the Beaufort Range on private forestlands owned TimberWest—the largest private landowner in BC—heavy rains caused flash floods, which carried heavy siltation and debris down into the Alberni Valley. Drinking water was contaminated, a boil-water advisory was issued, and several landowners suffered severe property damage. The impacts of this event continue to be felt to this day. One local property-owner, Wayne Crowley—a former logger and road-builder in the forestry industry—was hardest hit by this disaster. To this day, whenever there are heavy rains, flooding and debris run down from the clear-cuts above his property, washing out his roads, contaminating his local water supply, and piling gravel upon his lands. The Private Forest Land Council (PFLC)—the industry-led body that oversees logging on private lands—determined that the cause of the damage was some drainage culverts that were too small, which became blocked with debris and washed out onto Wayne's property. Wayne, who was a professional road-builder in the forest industry for decades, also claims that TimberWest's shoddy road-building practices were partly to blame for the washouts. Another possible factor could have been that the act of clear-cutting on steep slopes has been proven to increase the chance of landslides by up to ten times. Clear-cutting removes the water storage capacity of the soil, causing rainwater to run down in greater volumes, causing greater erosion. However, the PFLC diminished the impacts of these other factors in their final report, focussing solely on the insufficient size of several drainage culverts. Eventually, the Private Forest Land Council fined TimberWest the maximum amount of $25,000. TimberWest also paid Wayne an additional $35,000 to put the matter to rest. But Wayne refuses to give up until true justice is served. Wayne claims that the roads above his property have not yet been fixed and are still causing problems to this day. TimberWest has never accepted full responsibility for its actions and Wayne is looking for accountability. In this video, Wayne takes us on a tour of his property to show us the damage that's been done. Photos taken from around the time of the initial event illustrate the destructive power of the flash flooding that continues to plague his land. And the MLA for Alberni-Pacific Rim, Scott Fraser, who has been involved in this situation from the beginning, provides his own insights on this story and the systemic failure that allowed it to occur.
