////////////////////////////////////////////////// Third Natures: Rare New Species 25.02.2015 ////////////////////////////////////////////////// In this lecture, architects Cristina Díaz Moreno and Efrén Garcia Grinda of the Madrid-based studio, AMID.cero9, will talk about their recent book, Third Natures: A Micropedia. The book presents 15 years of speculations, projects and built proposals by AMID.cero9 and their collaborators. Taking the form of a condensed encyclopaedia, its content is arranged alphabetically as a dictionary of terms that collectively represent architecture's 'third nature'. Projects are shown through drawings, models, objects and photographs. Their approach, both critical and celebratory, is based on the emergence of new, extreme and unexpected forms of beauty. Cristina Díaz Moreno & Efrén Garcia Grinda are architects and founders of the AMID.cero9. They are Diploma Unit Masters at the Architectural Association (AA) in London and recently held a professorship at the Institut für Kunst und Architektur in Vienna. Since 1998 they have been teaching together in Madrid (in parallel at ETSAM and ESAYA UEM) and have been visiting professors and lecturers throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. Their projects have been widely disseminated and they have won more than 40 prizes in national and international competitions. Their projects and writings of the last fifteen years were documented last winter in the exhibition and publication Third Natures: A Micropedia. More recently they have constructed the headquarters for the Institución Libre de Enseñanza in Madrid.

In 'The Flitter' the writer and performer Carl Hancock Rux delivers a single take monologue to two cameras, featuring text derived from Graham Parker's 2009 book project "Fair Use (notes from spam)". In particular, the monologue was based on a 50 page section entitled 'The Wire', which consisted mostly of fragments of spam e-mails plus a short essay on the phenomenon of being a human subject encountering spam. For 'The Flitter' the entire text was fed through indexing software and alphabetized by the first letter of each line in the original book, so that the essay was 'dissolved' into the surrounding text - periodically legible and retrievable, but just as often lost in the legitimate-sounding text debris that surrounds it. The viewer seeking 'sense' may find it continuously promised and endlessly deferred. Carl Hancock Rux wrestles with the text - sometimes stumbling over words, sometimes emphasizing and shaping them into affective coherence. And, in a mirroring of spams' appeals to both human and software filters, he is presented as simultaneously directly addressing the viewer and speaking to an invisible other. 'The Flitter' was produced at and with the assistance of the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Centre (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York. It premiered in Graham Parker's solo show at Sketch, London, in 2010. This is a split screen version of the work - which is more commonly shown as a two screen video installation on abutting perpendicular screens. The split screen version was first shown as part of a solo show ('The Confidence Man') at EMPAC in March 2011 www.grahamparker.info/theflitter.html Written and Directed by Graham Parker Camera Operators: Ben Tiven and Graham Parker Color Correction: H.Spencer Young

How will the East Japan Great Earthquake (3.11) affect trade discussions in Asia Pacific region? Will Japan become more inward-looking solely focusing on domestic reconstruction of East Japan and therefore miss opportunities to lead East Asian economic cooperation and to join Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP)? Or will Japan utilize multilateral regional economic frameworks for its own reconstruction? Are US, Japan, and China triangular relations already things in the past to determine the landscape of regional economic grouping and will US and China go their own ways leaving Japan alone?

HEMP SPECIAL!!! This show is dedicated to the magical cannabis plant which, apparently, can do more than get you high. Henry and Len, two hemp enthusiasts, joined us in the studio to discuss: * the history of hemp * the many uses of hemp * the logistics (and challenges) of growing hemp in the UK * hemp production in places like north america and eastern europe * hemp as a catalyst for political change * how to support decentralised, autonomous hemp production Alongside this goodness we had a few choice ganja-based mashups as well as some weed themed tunes. Japu Selektah wrapped things up with a tasty set of chilled out dubwise beats. D*I dissidentisland.org @DissidentIsland facebook.com/dissidentisland vimeo.com/dissidentisland
