My friend, Andrew Hall, and I made a pit-stop at the Spoon River Rest Area in Central Illinois to climb the lookout tower. It was something we have always talked about, and it felt good to accomplish the long standing goal. Despite the freezing temperatures I managed to film a little bit and make this short video showing you some of the sights.

This was shot on an overnight trip to one of my favorite lookouts. Was fun to get out and use the new camera equipment on such a nice spring weekend. October 18, 2012 - Mount Cammerer is a lookout tower that I have been wanting to visit for a good while, but I made myself patiently wait for the perfect timing. This is such a beautiful stone tower deep in the Smokies, and so I wanted to hit it at the peak of the Fall color. It's a good 5.5 mile hike each way if you leave from Low Gap Trail, and so I knew there would be very few hikers on the trail even during peak season. At the same time, I wanted some good friends on such a long hike. So, I was very excited to have Drew, Matt, and David join, making this their second tower hike with me. I hope that they can make it for more! Check out the great views over North Carolina and Tennessee from Mount Cammerer. Note: As with any fire tower or lookout tower, you are climbing at your own risk! Don't climb if it's especially windy out or if there is snow and/or ice on the tower. I learned about this tower primarily from Peter J. Barr's book, Hiking North Carolina's Lookout Towers (amzn.to/lookouttowers).

June 16, 2012 - With a one-week session under our belt at Rockmont, several staff members headed up to a higher elevation to check out the fire tower atop Green Knob. We started at the entrance to Black Mountain Campground and hiked 3.3 miles straight up the relentless Lost Cove Ridge Trail. We were incredibly blessed, though, at the top of Green Knob with inspiring views of the Black Mountains, Great Craggy Mountains, Seven Sisters, and the mountains surrounding Linville Gorge. Also, the tower had been newly renovated with a fresh coat of paint and new catwalk. The best part, though, was sharing the experience with so many fellow Rockmonters. After taking in the sights, we hiked the half mile down to the Blue Ridge Parkway, road out to Mt. Mitchell State Park for lunch, and then on down the Parkway back home. An incredible day! Note: As with any fire tower or lookout tower, you are climbing at your own risk! Don't climb if it's especially windy out or if there is snow and/or ice on the tower. I learned about this tower mostly from Peter J. Barr's book, Hiking North Carolina's Lookout Towers (amzn.to/lookouttowers).
