A social, public display of crowd moods & feelings during an large-scale event: people send SMS to a special number, the SMS's lenght is constrained to one_word. The messages are then displayed with a tree-like generative graphic software. As soon as a new message arrives a new branch blossoms.               davidmlally.com Striking is an animated short that was completed as part of my graduate thesis. The project featured a study of lighting and offered both traditional and unique opportunities for light and shadow throughout the animation. On Striking, I was responsible for all of the character and environment modeling, texture painting, and shading, using a combination of Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop, and Renderman. The light trail and hero vine growth effect were achieved in Houdini, using a variety of surface operators and l-system rule sets. Some of the vine growth effects were handled in Maya through curve extrusion, where I also had a chance to use point-based color bleeding in Renderman, allowing the vines to more naturally contribute light to the scene. Lighting and rendering took place heavily in Maya and Renderman, with some PRMan passes coming out of Houdini for effects, later to be composited in Nuke. Software: Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop, Houdini, Renderman, Nuke, After Effects

                  Based on the wonderful thesis on LSystem animation by Nicholas Hampshire which can be found here http://nccastaff.bournemouth.ac.uk/jmacey/MastersProjects/MSc09/Hampshire/userGuideFull.pdf I created this simple implementation of a tree. The tree is created using particles connected with springs. Bend forces keep the shape of the tree intact. This test doesn't do much fancy, but it shows how the tree keeps its shape when external forces are applied.

                      Another grooming tree test.... First lsystem for body and created another lsystem for flower. For flower size i created high system, this way floer size different through tip to top... This time i gave animation by hand and used simple curve for flower.
