A presentation of the fundamental elements of the Christian fact in light of At the Origin of the Christian Claim by Msgr. Luigi Giussani, with speakers Fr. Julián CARRÓN, President of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation Movement; and Fr. Sidney GRIFFITH, Professor of Semitic Languages and Literature at the Catholic University of America. In a dialogue with a group of university students in 1978, the late Msgr. Giussani, founder of Communion and Liberation, asked: "What is Christianity? What is it? We have to find an answer that would be valid for me even if I were an atheist. Do you get it? Even though I wouldn’t accept it, the answer has to be valid for me." More than 25 years later, in a letter to the Blessed John Paul II, he wrote that he had no intention of “founding” anything, but only “to proclaim the need to return to the elementary aspects of Christianity, that is to say, the passion of the Christian fact as such in its original elements, and nothing more.” The lecture will address the rationality of faith in the light of the work of Msgr. Giussani.

Panel discussion re: "The Religious Sense" by Luigi Giussani. Presented Sunday, January 16, 2011 in the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center in New York. Speakers: Fr. Julián Carrón, President of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation Movement. H.E. Sean Cardinal O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston. And moderator, Michael Waldstein, Professor of Theology, Ave Maria University. The New York Encounter is an annual four-day public cultural festival organized by Communion and Liberation and Crossroads Cultural Center. New York Encounter intends to offer to a large audience opportunities for education, dialogue, and friendship through conferences, artistic performances, and exhibits. Its goal is to foster, in a friendly and welcoming setting, interest in the full spectrum of reality and appreciation for what is beautiful, true, good, and worthwhile in various expressions of human life. This openness and desire are the fruit of the education received in the Roman Catholic Church. Communion and Liberation is an international movement in the Roman Catholic Church founded in 1954 by the late Msgr. Luigi Giussani. Its purpose is the education to the Catholic faith of its adherents. Crossroads Cultural Center was founded in 2004 by members of Communion and Liberation who share an interest in the relationship between religion and culture. St. Paul's suggestion, "Test everything, retain what is good," sums up Crossroads' ideals.
