A video essay influenced by the work of Left Bank French documentarian Chris Marker. It is my first attempt at anything remotely large scale, and while it is a work that is largely derivative of another (Sans Soleil) I'm considering this work a success and setting out to do more. It is, for me, a lesson in editing techniques and audio production. A foot in the door, a necessary first step toward something more original. This is a one man job (film, writing, music, voice-over, and editing done by myself) with some liberal use of borrowed footage.and additional photography credited to my wife. The entire work is licensed under the creative commons and if you'd like access to HD quality footage please get in touch with me. My most basic hope is that it will be viewed and enjoyed.

• Trailer: SUMMER OF SURREALISM (July series)

This summer, Nitehawk presents a multi-genre series that explores surrealism in film. Surrealism is always about departures rather than arrivals. Stemming from early 20th century surrealist writers and artists, surrealist cinema has never been wholly defined by a specific set of criteria. If fact, it rebels against it. After the end of the official Surrealist Movement in the 1930s, filmmakers like Luis Buñuel continued to incorporate surrealist elements into their cinematic work. This practice has continued with the collective work of Alejandro Jodorowsky and David Lynch along with other directors who embrace the dreamlike, stream of consciousness surrealist elements in individual films. Using surrealism as a language, Nitehawk’s Summer of Surrealism is inspired by Adam Lowenstein’s Dreaming of Cinema: Spectatorship, Surrealism, and the Age of Digital Media (forthcoming from Columbia University Press, January 2015). The series presents a collection of modern cross-genre films in which the world as we “know” it is not quite right: Holy Mountain, The Bed Sitting Room, Inland Empire, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Dead Man. Demolishing rational thought, they challenge the very notion of reality by embracing the surrealist tradition of dreamscapes and Freudian psychology, revealing that elusive space of existence between the everyday and the unconscious. Summer of Surrealism includes Live Sound Cinema, Art Seen, and Midnite presentations.

In the making of the title sequence for Luis Bunuel's Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie, I chose to combine playfulness with surrealism. The film is a satire on the lifestyle of the French bourgeois in the seventies. The narrative revolves around the theme of a failed dinner party, where six friends plan to meet each other for dinner but never successfully sit down and eat a full meal together. Enjoy! Music: Dmitri Shostakovich, Waltz No. 2.
