    • The Lingering and the Stain — trailer

      from Lull Studios Added 111 1 0

2008, Digital video, stereo sound, 11 minutes 15 seconds Conceived at the nexus of fantasy and flesh, The Lingering and the Stain records the actual etching of a poem onto a woman’s skin by a blind tattooist. Bound by rope and contract to perfect stillness, the woman’s mind wanders through the pain: perhaps her thoughts direct the needle, perhaps she’s ruled by the consensual act. Part gothic neo-noir, part hyper-real documentary, The Lingering and the Stain is a literally spine tingling short film. Bild-Lilli is a new and daring performance event by Elena Knox for Lull Studios, surreally riffing on the true and mercurial fortunes of Lilli, the 1950s German prototype for the Barbie doll. Savvy, sassy, hard drinking and smoking hot, Bild‐Lilli was born a tabloid cartoon, became a popular Hamburg men’s toy, and in a severe twist of ironic economics now delights little girls worldwide. Scheiße! Bild-Lilli premiered at The Malthouse, Melbourne, Australia in the Helium season in July 2012.

          • Lapdog (1 minute video reel)

            from Lull Studios Added 147 2 0

Lapdog is a live cabaret of exalted poetic text, original song and bass guitar. Written and performed by Elena Knox, Lapdog lets loose a schizophrenic Barbie doll, with all her accessories, outfits, personas and a subservient gimp-like Ken, to probe conditions for women in the workplace and report on the state of dollyness generally. Knox's highly individual virtuoso style and comic timing are supported by a custom-built, life-size, light-up disco doll-box ("Dolly Carton") that is more alive than one might wish. As Dolly negotiates her daily routines, her box struggles to contain her and eventually to slam her every move. Knox's Dolly is the ultimate 'portfolio' worker, defined by her geniality, mobility, adaptability, flexibility and multi-talents; but where the f&^k is the pay-off? "Is it spoken word? —hip hop? —cabaret? —it is as comedic as it is stimulating. One moment she's a foul-mouthed diva, dripping beat poetry, the next she's a wide-eyed doll, straddling a bass guitar and batting her lashes innocently." Clara Iaccarino, Sydney Morning Herald "...a stunning critique of the gendered and sexualized neoliberal subject rewarded for being ultra efficient and super flexible within the casual workforce...uses performance art, and the mode of cabaret, combined with physical theatre, to create a genre of cabaret without [traditional] ties of obligation." Cristyn Davies, Queer and Subjugated Knowledges Lapdog is available for seasons and festivals. Lull Studios is currently developing a prequel, Bild-Lilli, which will premiere in July 2012.
