Diamond Schmitt Architects won a design competition to create an installation in a downtown Toronto square for the 10-day Luminato Festival in June 2012. Windscape features nine robotic windsocks programmed by choreographers to 'dance' to music and a 700-foot-long blue spandex screen.

                • 1,000 Tastes of Toronto at Luminato

from View the Vibe / Added

So, the other day when Nicki was OOT for some much needed R&R in Niagara, I snatched up my favourite Italian couple – Ms. Jacqueline Nicosia (events at Andrew Richard Designs) and Il Padrino himself, Chef Roberto Marotta (Maialino Enoteca Italiana) – and hobbled over to the 1,000 Tastes of Toronto Luminato event in the Distillery District. About 35 restaurants were involved this year, among a few other catering companies and such. We grabbed 10 tickets for 10 tastes – a minutiae of the flavours around the historic compound. From cajun shrimp po-boys at Southern Accent to Tappo's arancini, from En Ville's bacon sliders two-ways to Edo's Kobe beef sausage, Queen Margherita's Margherita pizza to the Royal Lamington sponge cake coated in chocolate, Jack, Robbie and I left stuffed and fatigued from all the food in the summer sun. (PS I got an awesome tan!) FYI, when a festival's going on the Distillery now, you can drink within the boundaries. Just thought you should know. Check out the vlog below to see our little daytime adventure...and see where the 1,000 Tastes moniker clues in and finally makes sense. (I really should read up on things before leaving the house.)

                  • Food Meets Art at Luminato's Carretilla Initiative

from View the Vibe / Added

It’s Luminato time in Toronto and this year we were invited to an exclusive preview of the first ever “Carretilla Initiative”. First question that came to my mind was, what the hell is that? All I can say is thank God they did a proper media preview because once at this interactive foodie event, I clued in on what this was and how amazing this idea is! So, first things first – what is this initiative? It’s an “art meets food” weeklong event where artist Rainer Prohaska was brought in to create abstract mobile kitchens intended to serve as food stations where people are invited to prepare and then partake in a meal. Confusing? I know. Cool Concept? Definitely. At the media preview, charming blogger Val Stachurski (www.ImCharmingYou.com) and I partook in the creation of “poppy seed gnocchi”. At each food station within the cleverly designed mobile kitchen, we each had to create one part of the dish (don’t worry, there are professionals on site to help you). This delicious dish was all made from scratch – yes we made gnocchi from scratch. Well in reality Karon Liu (aka The Grid food writer) made that part… Val was in charge of beets. The whole thing was fun, interactive and the end result tasted delicious. This cool event is happening all week from June 9th to 17th at various locations around Toronto. Everyone is welcome to join in this culinary artistic event and I personally recommend it – first it’s fun and second, it’s free!
