MacLean’s sculptures are meticulous, handcrafted hardwood works based on found objects the artist has encountered on city streets—discarded paper bags, smashed milk cartons, industrial channelizers and other detritus. MacLean saves items he finds in public locations, then carefully renders them in fine hardwoods though a meticulous process that can take up to three years per piece, with the careful attention of a craftsman, all by hand and without the use of power tools or assistants. This new show is MacLean’s most ambitious to date. In the past, MacLean carved each sculpture from one or two pieces of wood, revealing each shape as he went. For the new show, MacLean is joining hundreds of individual pieces of wood to build each piece, then chiseling down these assemblages to shape the final work. The largest sculpture from the new show, a rendering of a cracker box MacLean found in Massachusetts, is five feet long and three feet high, and was constructed by joining over 450 individual pieces of wood. MacLean, who holds a BFA in sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design, has worked as an in-house model maker for architecture firms Gehry Partners and Predock Frane. He lives in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he maintains an artist’s studio on his home property.
