A Film by Carson Lund and Michael Basta Cinematography by Gaul Porat Score by Lillia Betz A retired writer (Clifford Blake) who once had a passionate intellectual following has since retreated to the woods to live in complete isolation. Wind Through the Cradle involves the arrival of his distant relative, a young journalist (Natasha Mogilevskaya) for an unspecified source who comes to immerse herself in his lifestyle and probe his inner being in an attempt to bring his enigma to public light. A tension builds as the journalist stays for longer than intended, which builds to a deeply ambiguous climax. Told with languorous narrative rhythms, minimal dialogue, and a graceful observational camera, Wind Through the Cradle is a mysterious examination of the limits of familial bonds in the foreboding silence of the forest. Inspired by a call to arms emblazoned on a floating LEGO man, this narrative short is an exploration of one teenage OxyContin addict's life and the delicate network of causality that ordered her narrative. Created by local artists responding to a community crisis, our experience took us from Florida's dark frontier history to the spiritual burdens of modern privilege. Sarasota is known as a world class beach town, a vacation destination, and retirement mecca. For those of us who call this paradise home, a much darker reality lurks beneath the postcard vistas. Our community is on the front lines of a opiate epidemic that is ravaging through our country. Facing its consequences firsthand, we're often left grasping for answers and meaning. One of its casualties, the death of an 18-year-old girl from an opiate overdose inspired our director, Vincent Dale, to break through the silence. In October 2011, an 8-foot tall LEGO man mysteriously washed up on the shores of Sarasota carrying an enigmatic message, “I’m here to discover your world and thoughts...take me with you on a journey.” This break from reality was the rallying moment for team of artists to come together and respond to this emergency through a collective artistic work. The challenge then became how to alchemize all of this chaos and suffering into something meaningful, even beautiful. The process of creating this film was a departure from tradition and an investment in exploring new ways of executing film projects. We advocate a socially conscious approach to filmmaking that prioritizes its resources towards promoting local talent and maximizing the advantages of digital technology. Entirely crowd funded and community supported, No Real Than You Are was blessed with the talent of dozens of local artists and performers. This film should be approached as a poetic journey through our collective experience. We don’t want audiences to feel that they’re walking away from the narrative. Instead, we want them to feel that they’re delving deeper into a constantly evolving story predicated on highly personal, even subtle, choices that can alter the course of culture forever.
