1. Magna Carta 4 - The French Connection?

    from Roger Stanway Added

This is the 4th in the series of short web movies about Magna Carta and its influence. It contrasts the centuries old concept of freedom based on religion in Britain, with that of the new concept of liberty which arose out of the French Revolution and which was based on atheism and the rights of man and the citizen.

                • Peter Pearson plays Lord Atkin in play Regulation 18B - No Free Man

                  from Jane Williams Added

ABOUT Peter Pearson is an actor, poetry speaker and narrator. In 'Regulation 18B' he plays the lead role of Lord Atkin. The play in one act questions how much power the state should have to protect us without threatening our basic human rights. Lord Atkin was born in Australia, but having spent much of his life in Wales he considered himself a Welshman. For the last five years Peter has worked in Wales at Cardiff University but returns to the 'big smoke' in his role as visiting professor at Imperial College London. Peter performed the play for the first time in London under the watchful eye of Lord Atkin whose portrait hung adjacent to the stage in the historic hall in Gray's Inn. Atkin was appointed to the King's Bench in 1913 and made a Lord Justice of Appeal in 1919 as Baron Atkin of Aberdovey. He was Treasurer of the Inn in 1914 and 1937. LORD ATKIN https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Atkin,_Baron_Atkin THE PLAY Inspired by actual events, this fictionalised one act play explores individual liberty at the time of war. At Issue is Regulation 18B which gave Britain's Home Secretary the power to arrest and indefinately detain citizens he deemed to be "persons of hostile associations". Two friends, Lord Atkin and Lord Wright, now esteemed Law Lords serving on Britain's highest court, find themselves at bitter odds in the landmark case of 'Liversidge v. Anderson. With themes that resonate from Magna Carta to present day, the play presents questions which challenge the greatest legal minds and the firmest of friendships.
