This October, we did a hiking and leaf peeping trip through beautiful New England (Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut) for just 12 days. It was right at the same time as the US government shutdown which turned out to be a rather odd experience. This is a collection of moments and thoughts. Oak Street Bootmakers - Designed in Chicago, handmade in Maine. LEGACY The son of a cobbler, Oak Street Bootmakers founder and designer George Vlagos apprenticed at his father’s shop where he learned the craft of shoemaking from an early age. Today, George seeks to preserve the heritage of fine shoemaking through thoughtfully designed and attentively crafted shoes. CRAFTSMANSHIP All Oak Street shoes and boots are handcrafted in the USA by shoemakers with over 20 years of experience. The highest standards of production are employed to yield shoes that are as durable as they are comfortable. Each pair makes use of replaceable outsoles, a feature normally reserved for formal footwear, to ensure a lifetime of wear. QUALITY Oak Street shoes and boots are constructed from renowned Horween Chromexcel leather. Chromexcel undergoes 89 separate processes taking 28 days and utilizing all five floors of the Horween facility in Chicago. Over the past 100 years very little has changed in the formula. Food-grade beef tallow, cosmetic-grade beeswax, marine oil, chrome salts, tree bark extracts, and naturally occurring pigments are combined. The mixture is then applied using heat, steam pressure, the hands of craftsmen and time. This ultimately yields the soft, supple and durable leather that is used for your shoes or boots. from Mike Taylor - Taylor Photography Added 47.1K 106 21

June 22 2015 - With news that Mother Nature was going to put on a Northern Lights display we headed to one of our favorite spots to view and capture them – Moosehead Lake, Maine - located just above the 45 degree latitude point. The show started just before 10PM. It ebbed and flowed through the night until almost 3AM - this was easily the longest and most impressive aurora display we have witnessed. The Visual: a huge green arc with dancing spikes and pulsating waves of light that stretched overhead & over 180 degrees across the sky. At a few different points it was a variable rainbow of colors. All of this was being perfectly reflected in the smooth-as-glass water right in front of us. The Audio: a nearby crackling campfire, the call of the loons, some crickets & frogs and the occasional sound of a chipmunk scurrying past. All footage shot with Nikon D600 & 14-24mm and D7000 & Tokina 11-16mm. f/2.8 - 15 seconds - ISO 1600 - 18 second interval (3 second gap in between exposures) Processed and rendered via Lightroom CC, LRTimelapse & Photoshop CC. Cheers! Feel free to share this video if you dig it and thanks for your support. .© Mike Taylor - Taylor Photography - All Rights Reserved. • Maine Beaches

from Maine Office of Tourism Added 46.5K 12 0

Maine beaches come in many sizes and shapes. White sand ocean beaches cover much of the southern Maine coast and dot the rest of the 5,500 miles of Maine coastline. By day, beaches are teeming with people building sandcastles, body surfing, searching for seashells and just soaking in the sun. In the evening, the low rumble of the surf crashing upon the shore offers a soothing backdrop for a romantic stroll. However, saltwater beaches only present half of the beachgoing opportunities in Maine. With 6,000 lakes and ponds, fresh water beaches abound. Maine’s municipalities and state parks boast a variety of beaches where families can refresh themselves in crystal clear lakes surrounded by lush green forests. Many of the state parks provide additional amenities such as grills, picnic tables, playgrounds, restrooms, snack bars, campsites and nature trails, making them the perfect place to spend one or more days.
