The Myers Media Art Studio is a project of the Program in Art and Art Education. Our mission is to explore emerging media art practice and its implications for art education, both within and outside of schools. We want to create a space for imaginative media play and invention. Please say hello!

3d-printing, or additive manufacturing, is taking the world by storm. Hobbyists, small businesses and even universities are taking advantage of continuous drop in 3d-printers’ prices. Here we have a Felix 1.0, one of the top hobbyist printers (under $1500), materializing its own brand insignia.

Kyle McDonald https://twitter.com/#!/kcimc Matt Mets https://twitter.com/#!/cibomahto Blind Self Portrait uses computer vision algorithms to build a contour drawing of the visitor, and a moving platform guides their hand to execute the drawing while their eyes are closed. The experience of machine-guided movement is surprisingly uncanny, and when the drawing is complete it's unclear who should be signing the work. Exhibited at the NYC Resistor Interactive Show and the Slap Dash series at Launchpad in Brooklyn. The October 2011 ART && CODE conference at Carnegie Mellon (http://artandcode.com/3d) featured a weeklong “festival as laboratory” hackathon dedicated to the exploration of new cultural applications of 3D sensing and visualization technologies. During this period, a group of 15 hackers, artists and researchers huddled in CMU’s STUDIO for Creative Inquiry to create new Kinect-based artworks and experiments. Here, Matt Mets, a developer at Makerbot Industries, presents his project developed at the ART && CODE hackathon: a “3D Photobooth” which creates a 3D-printed portrait of a person in real-time. In Matt’s project, a depth map, captured from a Kinect sensor, is processed by a custom openFrameworks application with OpenCV. The application then exports tool-paths directly to a Makerbot 3D printer, without the need for additional processing of the captured 3D model. Code for Matt’s project is at http://github.com/cibomahto/Makerbot-1.

This video titled 'We Met Heads On' is my remix of the 3D scan hackathon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY organised by Makerbot. The public were invited to scan artifacts to then modify and 3d print derivatives. The files ended up on Thingiverse, giving me access to the scans, in particular 'decimation study - met heads' by scotta3d which is a derivative from another thingiverse user tbuser. To continue the lineage of derivatives, I have placed the low-polygon heads from scotta3d into a Processing sketch that distorts the meshes in realtime in response to sound and outputs the modified stl objects. The soundwave is analysed from the streaming audio and used to force the mesh to twist to the strength of the soundwave. Performed and recorded in real-time. Credits. The song is "Air And Lack Thereof" by James Blake.
