The idea was to road trip from Alaska to Los Angeles, explore Southern and Central Africa, and tour South America on dirt bikes. Reaching a tipping point, my friend and I decided it was time. We booked a one-way ticket to Alaska, bought a used truck, and hit the road. This documents our journey for 6 months, over 3 continents, in 13 countries. Our travels stretched across the United States, Canada, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. Slideshow I made from the photos I (and Amanda) took in Malawi. Wish I would have been able to take the Time Capsules class before I went, but I'm loving everything I'm learning. And I'll be ready the next time I go to Malawi.

A journey through Malawi & Tanzania. We began our journey in Park Station, Johannesburg. After a 44-hour bus trip we arrived in Blantyre – the administrative capital of Malawi. From Blantyre we journeyed by bus to the lake – first to Cape Maclear and then we headed north to Nkhata Bay. After a week by the lake we made our way over the border to Mbeya in Tanzania. From Mbeya we took the Tazara Train to Dar es Salaam where we ended our journey. Music by Vox Portent SoundCloud: soundcloud.com/voxportent

These are some shots from our first test run of the 5D on a 2009 trip to Africa. We picked up the camera 2 days before jumping on the plane from Perth. Our main camera was a Panasonic HPX502. There are a few issues with the 5D as a production camera, but we were impressed with what it could achieve considering its size and cost. All shots have been conformed from 30 to 25fps and no colour correction/grading has been applied. The purpose of the trip was to film a documentary not only to raise awareness about poverty and disease in that country, but also to show the positive effects of teaching people how to live more sustainably through the Food Security Projects being introduced by Global Concern. These shots where taken on the first part of our trip near Karonga, Lake Malawi in June 09.

72 minute documentary Bush League is a character driven ethnographic survey of a tiny village in Northern Malawi. Intimate dramas unfold in the lives of four villagers who are all members of the local soccer team. Chatwa, the team captain, is an ambitious farmer who’s in deep with the local bank but torrential rains are destroying his crops. Jake, an American Peace Corps volunteer who sponsors the team, is pushed to his limits when the politics of the game affect his school construction project. Jacqueline, the head cheerleader, suspects her husband is cheating on her and is concerned he’ll give her HIV. Mlawa is a midfielder and an expectant father who’s gravely concerned about the infection growing on his leg. Each must face their individual challenges as the team battles to win the local championship.. In 2012 we had the chance to visit South Africa to film bouldering in Rocklands. While bouldering there is amazing, we could not help but ask ourselves if there was good bouldering in other parts of Africa. With only sattelite imagery from Google Earth as information, we decided to bet on the small, overlooked country of Malawi. This Summer, climbers Mélissa Le Nevé and Benjamin Rueck flew to Malawi, knowing almost nothing about the country. They quickly discovered why the country is called "The Warm Heart of Africa". www.adidas.com/outdoor presents a VAST MOTION PICTURES production Producer, Director and Editor: Haroun Souirji Cinematographers: Haroun Souirji, Julie Guignier Sound Mix: Laurent Mollard Still Photography: Scott Noy www.facebook.com/VastMotionPictures
