Outside Ségou, only a few minutes by boat, lies Kalabouyou Island. The women on the island, make beautiful terracotta pots in different sizes and shapes. A couple of women showed us how the work is done, and it was very impressive and fascinating. Like a friend said to me "if the world goes to shit, it's people like these who are going to survive". I think she might be right. =o) Camera: Canon 7D Lenses: Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8 Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 Extras: Z-finder Röde Stereo VideoMic Induro CT214 tripod with Gitzo G2380 video fluid head

Tinariwen, the 'guitar-poets' from Southern Sahara, really offered something special for the Other Music in-store series. After a jaw-dropping show, the Tamashek interpreter (not that easy to come by in NYC!) helped us do an interview with these far away friends.

The Recycling market in Bamako, Mali (West Africa) has been around for over 20 years. It started in the rural areas, but has now become commercial. Mali is the fourth poorest country in the world. When you don't have much, you tend to not throw anything away. At the Recycling Market, cars, old railways, tins etc. gets new life and become wheelbarrows, buckets, ploughs, household utensils and anything that you can come up with. It's a place soaring with activity, and music from the banging, hacking, hammering, keeping the furnaces going, etc. It is rather awesome! =o) Watch this video and get a sense of the recycling market in Bamako, Mali. Mali, December 2009. (This video contain bloody clips...) On a trip through Mali, our guide Madou and driver Bagari decided to cook us some lunch. They went to the market and came back with 2 chickens. Alive chickens. Together they cooked us a nice lunch, although, I wasn't so keen on chicken after seeing how it was prepared. We created this piece for ONE.ORG. It documents a very important and highly successful Meningitis A vaccine launch that took place in three African countries within the past year. PATH, a highly respected NGO, along with the World Health Organization and partners from around the world delivered the vaccine to Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger - and within a single month virtually eliminated new cases of Meningitis A.

Clemantine is a Millet Beer brewer in Ségou, who started her business over 27 years ago. She has seen many changes over time, and most recently, it's the rapidly changing climate, which has affected her, with the price of millet skyrocketing. Clemantine was kind enough to show us some of the aspects of making Millet Beer, and she also invited us to taste some of her brew. It was not very carbonated, but the taste of beer was complete.
