Snowboarder Magazine has done video contest for Superpark for a few years now, however this year the contest is based off videos solely for companies called “The Battle of the Brands”. To me this is interesting because it seems to mirror the trend that the snowboard video industry is going through. It appears that there are starting to be an increase in the number of team/brand based videos and fewer crew videos. Most of the entries for BOTB have been super solid with a bunch of really good riding. However there is one video that really stood out to me, the Volcom entry. It is such a fun edit to watch, it’s got the perfect blend of awesome park riding, resort riding, great music and hijinx. All of the riders have atleast on trick that stands out in my mind. Also any video that has Cody Rosenthal in it is always worth watching multiple times. I had never heard of Frank Knab before but I really dug his tricks and his style. Zac Marben did a massive method that was tweaked beyond belief. The list of tricks could go on and on. I personally think that the push for more team/brand based videos is sick because it will make it so that companies can create stronger brands identities and better showcase popular team riders as well as new up-and-coming Ams. One of the most popular team/brand based videos of all time has to be “The Garden” and “Subject Haakonsen” by Volcom. These classic videos were instrumental in establishing Volcom as a “cool” brand in the snowboard scene. I feel that they have kept with that feel for too long and this video seemed to break that mold while still being true to the brand. I would for sure buy a Volcom video if it were like this entry for Battle of the Brands.

SKYS is the culmination of about two years of setting up a tripod and a camera, pointing it at the sky and waiting for something interesting to happen. I've seldom gone out with the express intention of shooting a timelapse but instead carry my trusty Canon 5DmkII and a tripod with me while on vacation, on jobs, bicycling or hiking around. I try to let the sky come to me and with good luck I've managed to capture a few. There's a bit of flicker, some dirt on the lens and maybe a jump or pop here or there but after four months of processing to remove such artifacts it's become time to move on and let it out into the world. I hope you enjoy it. Music: 2001: A Space Odyssey - On the Beautiful Blue Danube, The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, 2001: Music from the Films of Stanley Kubrick. Tools include Canon 5D's for camera raw, DSLRemoteHD, Canon Intervalometer, After Effects for GBDeflicker and RSMB, Final Cut 7 for CHV Long Exposure and Final Cut X for editing prores 4444 10bit.
