    • one: a week at varuna

      from Mark Welker Added 4,658 47 7

Every journey starts with a single coffee: http://www.100cupscoffee.com Untold numbers of manuscripts are started, finished, and abandoned at the antique desks of Varuna House. There is always a cup of tea on the boil, a well stocked jar of chocolate biscuits, and enough creative space to stretch your authorly ego. In the mornings frost gathers at the windows to witness the writer’s spooning themselves from their warm beds. The daffodils stand to attention as the day broadens with sun. When it is quiet, and it is often this way, you can hear the scratching of pens and the light footfalls of fingers on keys. Each writer finds their pace as the day thins out, slipping by like a unwinding spool of cotton. Then as the sun drops and the chill blue mountain air seals around the house, a fire is lit, the table is set and the night's menu is explained. The writer's gather to lick their wounds and toast the day's triumph ('I made it!'). The food is hot and plentiful and tastes of home, the wine softens the heat from the fire. And waiting in each room is the desk, the manuscript, the poem. An open notebook full of expectation. And Eleanor walks the halls, checking in on us all. Filmed on Canon 5D MKII with Nikkor 50mm and 28mm lenses and 24-105mm Canon lens.

A little piece I shot to test out my BMPCC running around with a photographer near the Salton Sea Beach on 4/5/14. We ended up driving around the 'Lake' looking for 2 dead trees that were nowhere to be found. Quick edit/color over a day to not dwell on the footage. All comments/questions are welcome! • Manfrotto Monopod Demo Footage

            from Mark Welker Added 9,633 22 15

For most, this movie will probably be quite dull. For those those considering purchasing a monopod, I hope you will find it useful (please let me know either way). I took a range of pans using my HV30 with and without the Manfrotto 560B monopod to help demonstrate the stabilising effect of using a monopod over handheld. I am by no means a handheld expert (just look at my woeful pans), nor am I a monopod expert. This is me at the park, a day after I got the monopod trying my best to compare the two styles of shooting. I think you will immediately see the marked improvement using a monopod has on image stability. After only using it for a few days, my off the cuff shooting quality has improved in leaps and bounds. Each shot is preceded with a label saying whether it was handheld or monopod assisted. The last long shot of the water bird is all thanks to the smooth movement possible with the 560B - I couldn't bring myself to cut it. At the time I shot this my DOF adapter was broken, so unfortunately I don't have any footage of the monopod and adapter. My next videos will all be using (for the most part) the DOF adapter and monopod. For more details and first impressions of the Manfrotto 560B monopod, check out http://hv30.wordpress.com

                from Mark Welker Added 604 11 9

Shots from my reclusive writing trip down south to Prevelly, Margaret River. The weather was uncharacteristically overcast and gloomy for two whole weeks, making for some dark shots and heavy vignetting. Clean sunlight makes a big difference to the twoneil 35mm adapter. On that note, two weeks of nothing to do but write makes a big difference to writer's block. I whole heartedly recommend the recluse approach for those experiencing the frayed end of the creative tether... Music: Where two Oceans Meet by Josh Pyke. Shot with Canon HV30, Twoneil 35mm adapter, Manfrotto monopod and Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens.
