29 JUNE 2013, Brasilia, Brazil/London, UK - HOLITION, experts in advanced 3D digital experiences and US based V SQUARED LABS, a technology driven visual arts studio, collaborated with the family of legendary Brazilian singer, Renato Russo to create a daring hologram of the rock musician ‘playing’ alongside the Orchestra of the Teatro Nacional de Brasília. The Renato Russo tribute is the first ‘live’ concert in Brazil to feature a 3D hologram at the new Mane Garrincha National Stadium – a venue also playing host to the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and The Olympics in 2016. The Stadium is the first live event in Brazil to feature a 3D hologram of one of its most popular musicians. Thanks to the support and commitment of producer Giuliano Manfredini, son of Renato Russo, 50,000 fans were able to pay homage to his father who died in 1996. An incredible life-size hologram of Renato performing ‘live’ was a magical and surreal moment for many of the fans. Once the lights dimmed ‘Renato Russo’ appeared playing “Ha Tempos” one of his most famous hits. Other international artists included Boden, Zélia Duncan, Ivete Sangalo, Ellen Oléria and Hamilton de Holanda, The Renato Russo hologram, created by the 3D digital specialists at HOLITION and V-SQUARED LABS involved painstaking research and the studying of footage to enable the holographic technologists to produce a large scale hologram – a technique which owes its origins to the illusionary technique called “Pepper’s Ghost” involving transforming two-dimensional surfaces into absolutely precise, three-dimensional images of real objects. To make the projected image as real as possible a method actor was filmed and then digitally augmented to recreate the illusion. HOLITION’s expertise lies in its ability to bring together the magic of theatre to create a fully immersive experience where volumetric objects can seem to appear or disappear, become transparent or literally morph into another. “Renato Russo dreamed of returning to his roots in Brasilia, DF. “One of the strengths of this show is that Brasilia has always been the muse of my father’s A great opportunity for people of my generation to take advantage of that spark of strength he had,” - Giuliano Manfredini, son of Renato Russo Sanj Surati, Experiential Producer at HOLITION said “it’s been a fantastic journey to see how we can recapture Russo’s style and lyrics portraying the frustrations of a lost generation in a pop/rock style and turn it into an awe-inspiring memorable experience which still resonates with the young and old today. This is HOLITION's first initiative in Brazil and there are plans in the pipeline for more exciting installations in this region.” Leading the charge for V SQUARED LABS are Creative Director Vello Virkhaus and Senior Producer Chris Kraft. “Bringing Renato back to life by way of a hologram has been a huge challenge. We have embraced the most recent digital technology to completely recreate Renato Russo’s image for this ground breaking concert event.” said Kraft. The show was directed and filmed by VisuaisO effects Hollywood director Mark Lucas, which will be broadcast live by a cable television channel and recorded on CD, DVD and Blu-Ray.

This was the crowning achievement of my college days. Created in the winter of 2006, it tells the story of a blighted young artist who comes to confront his own morbid fascination in a way he never expected. His reaction is equally unexpected. Filmed in a weekend with a strong beginning and middle in mind. The ending didn't come about until the first 2/3 was edited. The biggest lesson I learned was to know what story you wish to tell before you start, otherwise, the unknowns can really muddle the final product.
