There are few things better than driving into the Valley in October. You come around that one turn and all focus shifts from the road to El Capitan's West facing walls. Amazing. I pity the fool that stands outside their car on this stretch of road. All attention is paid to the rock, and none to moving vehicles...read the rest of the trip report: www.smileysproject.com Filmed by: Mark Smiley Janelle Smiley Edited by: Mark Smiley Music: Time to Run by Lord Huron We Can Make the World Stop by The Glitch Mob

Follow Mark & Janelle Smiley's journey to climb the Fifty Classic Climbs of North America. The South Face of Mt Waddington is located in British Columbia's remote Coast Range. "I often think of those marvelous weeks spent in the Waddington Range in 1950. 2 new routes on the northern side of the peak and the 3rd ascent of the mountain as well. Waddington is one of the more beautiful peaks in all of Canada and it's only 175 miles north of Vancouver. It’s easy to spot the civil engineers among Camp 14’s tent city, as their walls are constructed perfectly, with ice blocks fitting together to create airtight fortification. Once our little campsite was constructed we rested. About that time the routine of living on Denali set in hard and fast. The routine looks something like this... Visit the campaign page here, with sweet highlight video http://goo.gl/tvDeJ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the first of several mixed climbing pitches. M5 is the Supertopo rating. I don’t mix climb that much, so I was nervous. This was evident in the amount of cams I brought….many. Ditching the pack, I racked up and was off. There was a lot of snow covering the rock, which had to be removed. I hooked and pulled my way up little by little. Having a fifi hook was nice when things got cruxy. I would fifi into the highest piece, and start excavating snow and ice to get down to rock, hook my tools onto some stupid-tiny granite crystal the size of a pencil eraser, and pull up to the next placement. Here is what Janelle and I brought on a 26 day expedition to Alaska this year. The total weight was 113 lbs. We ended up using 2.5 gallons of white gas, and two mid sized fuel canisters for the Soto upright stove. On Denali, at the 14,000 foot camp we got a lot of food from other groups going down. Much of which we shared with others. At the end of our stay we had a lot of food that we passed on to others as well. 2 lbs / person / day is pretty standard. Add a little if you are a really big eater.

The mountain came in and out of view as we hiked to its base. Neither one of us said much as we crossed the mini snowfield, as we knew this was going to be a cold climb. Not to say that climbing in the cold is as bad as sitting in city traffic, but we had been hoping that this “easy” classic climb would be warm and sunny as most other Sierra climbs tend to be.... read the rest of this trip report at: www.smileysproject.com Filmed by: Mark Smiley & Janelle Smiley Edited by: Mark Smiley Music: In Between Day by Ben Folds

Janelle was filming Steve House (in yellow) climb a mixed route just south of Ouray CO when a big powder avalanche started to slide. Thankfully it was on the other side of the road. Regardless, the powder cloud totally covered us. No one was hurt.
