Black Diamond athlete Will Cardamone is part of the BD athlete posse that calls the Aspen Valley of Colorado their home. Below is a brief recap of this sweet and soulful video Will filmed and edited of the crew reaping the rewards of living and skiing in one of Colorado's primo mountain zones. BD riders featured in the video include: Adam Mozynski, Mark Welgos, Chris Erickson, and Cardamone. =================================== Over The past four winter seasons I have had the amazing opportunity to travel around the world to ski. These expeditions have all been focused on capturing the art of skiing through film and photography in some of the most breathtaking mountain ranges in the world. Thanks to Black Diamond and my other sponsors what was a dream in the beginning has turned into reality. Although I love the aspect of traveling for skiing, the mountains around my home in Colorado still remain the most beautiful and awe inspiring in my eyes. These are the West Elks surrounding my hometown of Aspen. Until this season I have not really had the opportunity to capture what myself and the other Black Diamond athletes who call this place home do in these mountains. We usually end up going to where the film companies are and haven't had the chance to fully capture the essence of our home winter environment. Now, with the help of Black Diamond, I have a camera and have been focusing on shooting our daily excursions throughout the Elks. Here is a short edit I put together that shows just a fraction of what my big backyard has to offer. This is just the first of many and I hope you enjoy! — Will

Black Diamond athlete Mark Welgos has skied all over the world, and one of his favorites continues to be the high peaks in his backyard of Aspen, Colorado. Here is a video and report from his amazing 2010 late season in the Colorado highcountry. To view Welgos' photos, go to: ============================== Ski resorts around the country celebrate their season endings with all-out parties. Aspen Highlands is rumored to have one of the best. Yet, this year it wasn’t about the party; it was about the amazing conditions on the mountain. My last day on-piste consisted of lapping Highlands bowl in powder conditions and ending with an all-time party. For some, this day represents the last day of skiing for the year. For my group of friends, it represents the start of early days and long hikes in order to ski the world-renowned backcountry in the Aspen area. The 2010 spring season in the West was exceptionally abnormal. This season Aspen experienced a low snow year and received most snow when the mountain wasn’t open. After the lifts closed, winter continued for weeks and we took full advantage. There were many highlights this spring, but the best is highlighted in this video. It includes lines off Maroon Bells, Pyramid Peak, Castle Peak, Highlands and the out of bounds Maroon Bowl, Highlands Mountain closing party, and a deep day on Aspen Mountain after the lifts were closed. This video portrays the feel of the off-season in Aspen from a skiers perspective. Sure the night life is dead and there is no one in town, but there are endless lines for those willing to put in the effort. The conclusion of the video is bringing attention to the increasing problem we face in Colorado during the spring. Dust storms are becoming more frequent and are detrimental to our snowpack. This phenomenon is not only a curse for skiers, but it is predicament for water mitigation. The dust layer absorbs much more energy then white clean snow, thus increasing the rate at which snow melts. Reservoirs fill up quicker, making it tough to calculate the rate of discharge. This problem presents a new dilemma for an already problematic resource in the west. What a season this has been! I want to thank my sponsors for making it all happen: Black Diamond, Arcteryx, POC, Bendis Skin Care, and Adventure Eye Video Systems. I’m already counting down the days for next season. Living to ski another line... — Mark Welgos

Back in Aspen, where I had just departed from, the conditions were perfect and it left me wondering why I had even left. In March 2009, Drew Stoecklein rallied together fellow BD skiers Brett Crabtree and Mark Welgos, photographer Will Wissman and snow safety tech Tyler Jones and headed into the Lost River Range of central Idaho. The objective: ride horses deep into the backcountry to score first descents on the isolated region’s mind-blowing terrain. The problem: some of the worst snow pack imaginable. The solution: have fun and deal with it. The result: an epic adventure, random craziness and even some skiing. Below are the thoughts of Stoecklein, Crabtree, Welgos, Wissman and Jones on their trip into the Lost River Range.
