    • Pittsburgh's Mayor Peduto Wants to "Leapfrog" Your City in Bicycling & Livability

      from STREETFILMS Added 6,633 16 0

Mayor Bill Peduto is putting the rest of the United States on notice. His city is on the rise and he fully intends on implementing bicycling, walking and complete streets policies that enhance and make his city more attractive to young talent and business. For the first time in over half a century, Pittsburgh is expecting an increase in residents as the trend in the number of people moving back to cities grows. In September, the ProWalk ProBike ProPlace conference took place in Pittsburgh and the energy of the city was on display as was Mayor Peduto, who was very active at the event. The hope local advocates have for the mayor is apparent as Pittsburgh has implemented its first true protected bike lanes downtown and is looking to create a more multi-modal city that more fairly balances transportation modes. When talking with the Mayor it's immediately obvious how well-versed in urbanism and the history of cities he is. Even so, he went on a study tour with The Green Lane Project to experience some of the best bicycling in Denmark this past summer. Our interview with Mayor Peduto touches on quite a few topics of Streetfilms' audience will love. There is a real momentum: cities across the country have been electing mayors who understand one of the keys to growing a city is having equitable transportation policies that work for all people.

            from Toby Corton Added 1,841 1 0

The Secret of Angel Row is a short documentary film on Bromley House Library, a private library that has been running since 1822. Situated at the heart of Nottingham’s city centre, seconds away from Market Square, a door stands open between two shop fronts. Not concealed, but hidden in plain sight. It leads into the Library that is quietly juxtaposed against the consumer culture surrounding it. The documentary aims to uncover the wealth of history, knowledge and tranquility that lies through the doorway; exploring the library and finding out why it is special to the people that use it, in the hope that the audience will recognise the importance of preserving such a unique cultural and historical hidden gems. Colorblind is created from footage shot in Market Square in Knoxville, TN. The shots that make up this project were filmed on a Canon XH-A1 with a Letus Extreme 35mm adapter. There was no intention to create anything fancy with this project, besides playing with settings and working with the video in Apple Color. While browsing music to play underneath the video, I ran across the song "Colorblind" by Counting Crows and thought it fit very appropriately with some of the footage. Shot on a Canon XH-A1, Letus Extreme, Canon FD 50mm f1.8, Canon FD 28mm f2.8, Canon FD 100-300mm f5.6

                    • The Other Knoxville - Alan Sims

                      from Visit Knoxville Added 1,141 0 0

It all started when Alan Sims asked what his city could do for him. Then he decided what he could do for his city.* When Alan and his wife moved to the Knoxville area about 30 years ago, they lived on its edges. The city’s surrounding neighborhoods suited their lifestyle. But in the past few years, as downtown has developed into its own lively neighborhood, the Sims wanted to make the center city their own backyard, not just their playground. But what about that backyard? Like many suburbanites seeking to move into the urban center, they had questions. Where would they shop for groceries? Where would they park? And what kind of yard, if any, would they have? Alan presumed he’d find answers to these queries online, but he didn’t find as many details about Knoxville’s fast-growing downtown from a resident’s perspective. So he founded a blog: Stuck Inside of Knoxville with the Urban Blues Again (a nod to Bob Dylan’s song “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again”) chronicles in words and photographs Alan’s adventures as a downtown dweller and, inspired by Jack Neely’s book about Market Square, documents this exciting stage in Knoxville‘s history. Whether he’s “on assignment” or not, Alan can be seen all over downtown, enjoying a cup of java at Coffee and Chocolate, taking in an early show at the Pilot Light, or anywhere in between. Now known to many neighbors and acquaintances as Knoxville Urban Guy, he’s established a reputation for getting the scoop on downtown developments, like the parking garage projects near TVA and on State Street, the opening of Suttree’s High Gravity Tavern and the annual Zombie Walk. The intrepid blogger admits to feeling a bit in over his head, especially when downtown is hopping with so many events and activities. But it’s clear to any native or newbie that this downtowner still thrives on being “stuck” in the middle of it all. * With apologies to John F. Kennedy stuckinsideofknoxville.com/
