Take another trip around the U.S. and parts of Canada through my eyes, with Adventure Is Calling II. I was fortunate enough to spend several months this past summer traveling around the U.S. and parts of Canada, teaching workshops and shooting timelapse along the way. Since the trip was so similar to the year before, I thought it was fitting to dub this video as a sequel to Adventure Is Calling. This trip spanned just shy of 4 months, covered around 14,000 miles and led to this film, composed of nearly 20,000 still images. It was so great getting so much feedback on the last video about how it inspired so many to get out, travel, and spend more nights under the stars. I hope this video will revamp those desires. Special thanks to Arn Andersson for making an extended version of his song The Truth Beyond for me to use for this video. www.arnandersson.com Camera Gear: Canon 5D MKIII Canon 5D MKII Canon 16-35L II Canon 24L II Canon 50 f1.4 Canon 70-200L II IS Motion control thanks to: eMotimo TB3 Black www.emotimo.com Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly www.dynamicperception.com Vanguard Tripods Editing: Adobe Lightroom Adobe After Effects LRTimelapse www.lrtimelapse.com Email shaneblack300@gmail.com for licensing inquiries. www.shaneblackphoto.com Instagram @shanemichaelblack

      • Maroon Bells Timelapse Holy Grail

Successful, albeit rough, attempt at the "Holy Grail" of timelapse (i.e., one continuous night-to-day or day-to-night shot) at the Maroon Bells in September of 2014. Ideally, I would have this video deflickered, but considering I foolishly decided to try zooming during the timelapse I figure I'll just go back another time and try again. I started shooting around 4:30am and was the first one to the lake. By sunrise, I estimate that there were 150+ photographers along the shore, as seen by all the lights in the foreground. Granted, this was Labor Day weekend! I finished up around 9:30am. Shot with a Canon 6D and a Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II lens.

          • Maroon Bells Night Sky

Here is another short clip of the night sky from our photo trip around Aspen. My brother, Mark Gvazdinskas, and I stayed up for 3 nights shooting the Milky Way around Aspen, CO and finally decided to go to one of the most photographed areas in the world, the Maroon Bells. We were not disappointed! We arrived around sunset and Mark and I set up close to Maroon Lake. Clouds were flying over head and the wind really started to pick up. Perfect conditions for Timelapse and Long Exposures! The sun set and the moon came out briefly as the clouds cleared and the Milky Way revealed itself. It was another calm, pitch black night and we were shocked that we were the only photographers in the area. The Milky Way passed over Pyramid Peak while reflecting in Maroon Lake, and finally set between North and South Maroon as the bluish glow of morning appeared. I have been working in post over the last year on a number of short sequences, and trying to figure out why the night sky over the Maroon Bells shot was filled with colorful ripples of light that looked like auroras. As a timelapse photographer, I go through painstaking measures to reduce flicker and noise in compositions and this was driving me crazy. I knew this far south it could not be auroras, but that is exactly what it looked like. I started to research other alternatives and finally found the answer, Airglow! Airglow is a natural phenomenon where the atmosphere creates it own light through a chemical and nuclear process that can be seen anywhere in the world under the right conditions. The result is a beautiful series of wavy colors and an aurora-like emission of green light that you can see in the Maroon Bells and Pearl Pass clips. More to come as I continue to edit. Cheers!
