    • Where the Dance Is

In the spring of 2009, choreographer Doug Elkins worked with 8 students from Beacon, a public high school in New York City. This documentary follows the process of their rehearsals, as the kids gain confidence, build a community - and are entertained by the humor and hyperactive wit of their teacher. This engaging look at an artist/teacher moves from philosophy to physicality, but subverts the American Idol formula of bravura final show - because that's not WHERE THE DANCE IS. Directed, shot & edited by Marta Renzi, with additional camera by Jake Goldwasser. 2009

From the woods to the water, from morning to night, encounters of various kinds abound in this narrative dance drama. INCIDENT explores relationships - ones that do, don't, might and never could occur. Sensuality is present in every scene, with moods ranging from playful to melancholy to exuberant. Dancing to music from klezmer-inflected originals by Guy Klucevsek & Steve Elson, and the propulsive music of Spaccanapoli, the cast is joined by award-winning actor David Strathairn. Directed and edited by Marta Renzi. Director of Photography Robin Doty, with Jake Goldwasser. With Tiffany Clarke, Chris Daftsios, Ryan Donovan, Caitlin Granados, Jessica Hans, Marta Miller, Robert Sorrentino, David Strathairn, Luis Tentindo and Kathy Wildberger

I'm uploading this 1984 video here so that I can link it to my blogspot. It was shot on 3/4 inch tape in one take, during rehearsal, in the Ted Shawn Theater while we were in residency at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival (was the cameraperson Caru Thompson?) IN THE DARK was originally made for a company called Werkcentrum Dans in Rotterdam - my first European commission which made me feel very sophisticated, and cosmopolitan, though it ends up with Aretha Franklin testifying the gospel. It's danced by Christine Philion, Peter Stathas and me, joined by Andy Wollowitz who was new to the company and Kim Flowers who never danced with us again. It doesn't quite fit with the Vimeo look - it's posted partly as a workaround to avoid Youtube's "3rd party matched content", and partly an homage to a past that shouldn't feel quite so long ago.

A man & woman dressed in funeral black arrive at a homestead. Both are silent, bottled up, separate. They enter the barn to work through their thoughts alone. By the end, both have found their way outside, to the fields and garden beyond, and to some kind of reconciliation. Conceived & edited by Marta Renzi, with Andy Chapman & Aislinn MacMaster. Cinematography: Sunny Sawhney. Music by Ariana & David Gillis.

A moody space of striking dark and light where 3 young men explore their social, physical and animal natures.  In solos, duets and trios, they gradually disrobe, shaking off the gaze of the spectator and emerging as three angelic, solitary and impassioned individuals.
