Just a few words can mean so much, free at last, free at last, free at last, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the great speech 'I have a dream' by Martin Luther King. I believe in ‘just trying your best’ no matter if you win or lose, succeed or fail the truth will always prevail and so Satyameva Jayte is an ancient Sanskrit term meaning just that. If we do good things then good things will happen to us and vice versa. So if we look after our world then it will be a better place for all of us, if we neglect or damage it then the outcome and truth will not be very good especially for our future generations, our actions dictate our future. Some of my favorite spots in the city. Especially at midnight. Whenever I need a little motivation or to just clear my mind, here are some of the places I go. Created this in one weekend. Got a lot of stares from pedestrians and police officers and probably one of the more rigorous shorts I've shot, but had a blast shooting it :) Music: Ode to Joy - Beethoven

My colleague Robert Sims http://robertsims.com/ asked me to sing with him in a concert honoring Dr. Martin Luther King. I've been his pianist for over a dozen years - so singing with him was an honor. This is an excerpt from a rehearsal for the event. I shot it with a Canon 7D, 50mm, and a 17-85mm zoom, recorded audio with a binaural mic, laptop and Digital Performer. "Stayed on Freedom" Cathedral of the Madeleine, Salt Lake City, Utah

The full speech here: http://mlk-kpp01.stanford.edu/index.php/encyclopedia/documentsentry/doc_the_drum_major_instinct/ On 4 February 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. preached ‘‘The Drum Major Instinct’’ from the pulpit of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Ironically, two months before his assassination on 4 April 1968, he told his congregation what he would like said at his funeral: ‘‘I’d like for somebody to say that day that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to love somebody’’ (King, ‘‘The Drum Major,’’ 185). Excerpts were played at King’s nationally televised funeral service, held at Ebenezer on 9 April 1968. Score: Bogdan Plish & Credo Chamber Choir

Morphing from 1 TO 59 in 15 seconds, time-lapses a go-go, and a clip from every newsreel that made an indelible impression on me over the last 50 odd years. I guess any attempt to squeeze 60 years of world history into under three minutes is bound to be very subjective, but here are the references made in this film: 1959 - Atom bomb trials in Arizona 1960 - Sharpeville massacre 1961 - Martin Luther King - 'I have a dream' 1962 - Nelson Mandela arrested 1963 - J F Kennedy assassinated 1965 - The Beatles 1968 - Man lands on the Moon 1968 - Mini-skirts 1968 - Student riots in Paris 1960's/70s - Vietnam war 1960's/70s - Women's Lib 1969 - Golda Meir's calls for negotiated peace for Israel 1976 - Riots in Soweto intensify calls for Nelson Mandela's release 1979 - Ayatollah Khomeini sweeps to power 1979 - As does Margaret Thatcher 1980 - John Lennon shot 1984 - Indira Ghandi assassinated 1987 - Reagan & Gorbachev sign arms reduction treaty 1989 - Berlin wall falls 1989 - A lone student braves Red Army tanks in Tiananmen Square 1990 - Nelson Mandela finally released after 27 years 2001 - Attack on the WTC in New York 2003 - Saddam statue falls in Baghdad, Iraq 2009 - Obama inauguration http://itunes.com/MichelGriffin or http://www.MichelGriffin.com to download the beautiful backing track.

I think 2014 is about living for others, for taking care of everyone on our little planet. "And I say to you this morning, that if you have never found something so dear and so precious to you that you will die for it, then you aren't fit to live. You may be 38 years old as I happen to be, and one day some great opportunity stands before you and calls upon you to stand up for some great principle, some great issue, some great cause--and you refuse to do it because you are afraid; you refuse to do it because you want to live longer; you're afraid that you will lose your job, or you're afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity or you're afraid that somebody will stab you or shoot at you or bomb your house, and so you refuse to take the stand. Well you may go on and live until you are 90, but you're just as dead at 38 as you would be at 90! And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit. You died when you refused to stand up for right, you died when you refused to stand up for truth, you died when you refused to stand up for justice." November 5th, 1967. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Score: Ben Lukas Boysen "The Behinian Gospel" from Gravity This footage was from time spent in NE DRC with DTJ's Mobile Cinema Program, which helps communities understand and heal from LRA trauma and reduce stigma for children who come out of the bush.
