Many people have heard of the Möbius band, a one-sided surface, but the work of August Möbius was more far reaching than just inventing a topological curiosity. His work in geometry, celestial mechanics and topology, sometimes called rubber sheet geometry, illuminates the mathematical and astronomical life of the nineteenth century. Möbius’s concerns, concepts and the methods he helped to develop played an important part in twentieth century mathematics. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/mobius-and-his-band Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. The life an work of one of the greatest mathematicians examined in detail: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/fouriers-series Joseph Fourier was interested in the mathematical study of the diffusion of heat in solid bodies which he described using infinite trigonometric series which are now known as Fourier series. These series had major applications in many other types of physical problems and led to many of the most important mathematical discoveries of the nineteenth century. Fourier series are used not only in engineering, geology and astronomy but also in number theory, control theory and statistics. Professor Tony Mann guarantees that you will be surprised by this talk!: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/this-lecture-will-surprise-you-when-logic-is-illogical Mathematics offers certainty. That there are infinitely many prime numbers or that four colours suffice to colour any map so that adjacent regions are differently coloured are statements which have been rigorously proved so that there can be no doubt about their truth. Mathematics, uniquely amongst human activities, is grounded on absolute truth, or so it has seemed to generations of mathematicians. But what happens when there appears to be contradictions in the logic on which mathematics is based? This lecture will explore paradoxes which cast doubt on logic itself. I guarantee that you will be surprised! A thorough examination of the life and work of one of histories greatest mathematicians, the "Shakespeare of Numbers", Leonhard Euler: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/eulers-exponentials Leonhard Euler was the most prolific mathematician of all time. He introduced the symbols e for the exponential number f for a function and i for √-1. He discovered what many mathematicians consider to be the most beautiful expression in mathematics, e ix = cosx + i sinx: a relation connecting the exponential and trigonometric functions. The exponential function and its inverse the logarithm function appear throughout mathematics and its applications, in physics, engineering, mathematical biology, chemistry and economics. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College Website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/eulers-exponentials Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. James Sneyd FRSNZ, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Auckland and jazz violinist, gave an At Six talk at the Royal Society of New Zealand on the interplay between maths and music. He outlined some of the failed attempts over 2000 years of Western culture to understand or compose music through mathematics and then explained that the construction of patterns is a far more fundamental connection between the worlds of mathematics and music.

After the news broke that the spy agency targeted thirty-five heads of state, not to mention the head of the UN, General Keith Alexander and Obama were on the defensive again and the cartoon ideas were frolicking in my head.
