Out of Countenance Interactive performance Stefano D'Alessio | Martina Menegon 2012 Concept Out of countenance is a dialogue between two faces, deformed and transformed by a digital process into something strange, obsolete. The facial expressions are exaggerated and amplified, drew in a 3-Dimensional space, bringing the common feeling of expression in a different and distorted perception. The human face as we know loose its physiognomy, allowing the other face to overlap, mixing, fusing together and turning into a digital creature, a representation of the human in the digital era. Description Two performers stands in front of their computer, positioned one to the extreme left and the other at the extreme right of the stage. The computers capture the performers faces thru their internal webcams, generating an interactive video flow that is projected on a screen. The projection screen fills the whole stage standing between the two performers. The two computers generate also an interactive audio flow that surround the audience by a 5.1 audio system. The performers interact with the system thru their movement, the expressions and distortions of their faces and pair of pocket torches, generating different video images and sounds.

Developing and testing a patcher made in Max Msp Jitter for an interactive installation by student Lai Kuen. Half of the installation will be placed at one location, the other half at another location. Network will be used for interaction between the two. The video's shows that the patchers interact with each other over the network (with a small delay). The sound is not the original sound of the installation but just for testing.

This project is a custom video drum machine using Max MSP Jitter and the Arduino. The user records a short video, trims the clip, adds distortion, and creates a rhythm. The resulting rhythm can also be recorded and looped. The layout and colors of the controller were inspired by the Roland TR808. To build this instrument, I relied on Max MSP Jitter to create the digital “brains” of the piece. The computer must record the clip, store it, call it up, and allow the user to trim and manipulate the clip. Timing was also an issue. The musician operating the program must be able to program a beat, record the beat, and add to it. The physical controller was built using the Arduino, dial and slide potentiometers, and LED lights. The left to right motion of the lights communicates the rhythm to the user, also adding a theatrical and performance element to the instrument.
