        A showreel of my compositing work over the last 6 months in my second year at The University of Hertfordshire. I am an enthusiastic young visual effects artist, looking for work in the industry over the course of my summer, open to internships, running jobs and other work! My main skill is in compositing and roto prep in Nuke, although I am also proficient in Maya in regards to 3D work. I created the helicopter landing shot by starting off with a still photo and projecting it onto 3D geometry in Nuke to create a camera movement. I cleaned up the plate, removing cars then I matte painted in various foliage / overgrown elements in Photoshop to transform the scene into an aged, decaying environment. Those were then projected over the top. I composited in the helicopter (which was modeled/textured/shaded by Zak Boxall and animated/lit/rendered by myself in Maya/Arnold) and used light groups to fine tune the lighting of the render in Nuke and make it sit into the scene better. The dust and leaf FX (created by Max Johnson) were really helpful with making everything blend together and transform the plain shot into a dynamic action shot. I shuffled out variations of the dust from the renders I received and comped them behind and in front of the helicopter (I'll be using Deep for this in the future) and then blurred/diffused them differently to create more variation. I also modeled the plant/bush assets in Maya and then comped them into the scene, which I think definitely takes the level of realism higher, making the helicopter and wind interact with the scene around it. This project taught me a lot about what it takes to make a moving, wind-blowing CG asset sit into a plate and look real. I also learned a huge amount about the VFX pipeline in general through working with other people and doing some 3D myself. The second shot with the helicopter was equally fun to work on. I had the chance to practice my roto and cleanup skills mainly (Nuke), with some added CG comp stuff. I also lit/rendered the helicopter. Again, I used light group AOVs a huge amount to fix the lighting in post, making it match the backplate more which was hard to accomplish in Maya. Graded in Nuke. The third shot is is another from our short film 'Altitude'. I keyed the bluescreen and comped in the cg and plate. The final shot is from the film 'Permian' by Jack Powell and Josh Thornhill.           Rainbow Connection was another one of my personal projects, which I worked on off and on, but mostly off. While there isn't much physical animation, lots of the little things kept coming up, so I never had time to fix everything. I wasn't much of a rigger back then, so fixing it is not a easy as it could be. I'm amazed that I ever got so much done. Besides, it takes days and lots of drive space to render it. Most of the time, time and space are at a premium. Regardless, this one was more of a visual experiment, about environment, mood, the more subtle physical cues, and the lip sync. This is still one of my favorite songs from the old Muppet Show era, especially with Jim Henson as Kermit (3min).
