This exhibition, organized by René Paul Barilleaux, the McNay's Chief Curator/Curator of Art after 1945, assembles the work of thirteen emerging and mid-career abstract painters whose art is characterized in whole or part by high-key color, obsessive layering of surface imagery, use of overall and repeated patterns, stylized motifs, fragments of representation, and a tension between melancholy and the sublime. To date, little focus has been placed on works which celebrate the exoticism, exuberance, and optimism found in the work of the painters assembled in Beauty Reigns. Beauty Reigns is accompanied by an illustrated book that includes two essays by Lilly Wei and Stephen Westfall contextualizing this approach to abstract painting and tracing its roots in twentieth-century art. Additional biographical and interpretative texts on each of the artists are authored by Barilleaux. The book Beauty Reigns reflects the dynamic nature of the exhibition in its aesthetic, approach, and design; expands the imagery seen in the museum; and offers a larger window into the work of these artists and their particular approaches to painting.

Harriett and Ricardo Romo discuss Estampas de la Raza with curator Lyle Williams "Estampas de la Raza" introduces recent gifts of contemporary Mexican American and Latino prints to the McNay from collectors Harriett and Ricardo Romo. More than 60 prints by 44 artists reveal the richness of a mixed cultural heritage, with depictions of Frida Kahlo, lowriders, tattoos, and the Virgin of Guadalupe. The exhibition focuses on aspects of the Latino experience in the United States: the celebration of a mixed "identity"; the Chicano Movement’s "struggle" to achieve sociopolitical equality; "tradition, memory, and culture" in the everyday lives of Latinos; Latino "icons"; and "other voices" suggesting the diversity of the community. Many images are larger than life, serving up a colorful, visual feast.

ANDY WARHOL: FAME AND MISFORTUNE assembles over 150 objects in all media, drawn from the rich collections of the Andy Warhol Museum in the artist’s hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Looking simultaneously at Warhol’s lifelong obsession with both fame and disaster, the works included in this broad survey juxtapose icons of popular culture, legendary entertainers, art world luminaries, and world leaders, with images of suicides, automobile accidents, skulls, and an electric chair. This diverse range of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and films span the three prolific decades of Warhol’s career, beginning in the mid-1950s and continuing through 1986, the year prior to his death. Source images for several of Warhol’s most notable works deepen the viewer’s appreciation of what inspired the artist, and offer clues to his working process. Self-portraits and photographs of Warhol by his contemporaries evoke the artist’s presence throughout the exhibition galleries.
