        • A moonlit Bonfire Night, Nov 2011

Bonfire Night means fireworks, and if you watch the horizon during this, you'll see thousands of tiny sparkles and starbursts over Manchester… Shot from MediaCityUK in Salford. In the foreground is the Lowry Theatre, and the Imperial War Museum in the North is the jagged building to the right. In the mid-distance is Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium, and behind it, most of South Manchester. I tried hard to keep the moon in the frame… love the way it arcs across the sky, even as the sun sets and an ever-thicker pall of smoke from thousands of fireworks and bonfires fills the night sky. Shot with a GoPro Hero2 over about five hours. You really should watch this in HD for maximum pleasure…

Slightly different from the original one, but this is the piece I submitted for Uni. First year BA TV and Radio project at the University of Salford. The project was to re-create a scene from several scripts. I chose to film the Dinner Scene from American Beauty, originally written by Alan Ball. You can see that one here: youtube.com/watch?v=ED7_y4jETo0 Now, obviously I didn't have the same budget etc, but this project is about our interpretations of the script, so this is how I've done the scene. The first shot is really out of focus, however it did appear correct on the monitor during filming. I'm toying with the idea of bullshitting "artistic" reasoning, saying something like since there's no tension between the characters in this shot, it shows a relatively happy family... and since they're anything but happy and content, it's blurring reality, thus the shot is intentionally blurred. I've got this art shit nailed. The colour correction & exposure isn't perfect or consistent, it's been quite frustrating to be honest.. The sun kept changing haha. Guess it's just a matter of more practise. Or in the future, getting a professional or anyone better than me to do it. :P The sound may need a few touch ups too. Let me know what you think of it so far. I'm back in editing on Monday to re-edit / burn to DVD, so might as well use the weekend to get some feedback. A BIG thank you to Joshua Elgar-Chetwyn, Louise Froggatt, Steven Quinn, and Charlotte Wilkins for everything you guys did on this film. Was great working with you! I'd recommend working with any of them, feel free to send me anything you want me to pass on to them.

Forming part of the Music Boxes exhibition at MediaCityUK for the Manchester International Festival, Maestro was developed by magneticNorth using Microsoft Kinect technologies and lets the audience control the tempo and dynamic of the orchestra using nothing but their hands, just like a conductor. Using razor sharp HD video and 3D surround sound, the audience are given an immersive and fun opportunity to conduct the famous orchestra. The concept and initial prototype was first created by the BBC R&D team who partnered with mN to develop the user experience, design and technical solution. This is the latest in a string of BBC projects from magneticNorth, including Desert Island Discs and The Proms 2011. http://www.mNatwork.com
