        • Adrian Woolard & Ian Forrester: BBC Connected Studio & Launch of the Perceptive Radio

          The BBC's Adrian Woolard gives us the backstory and a progress report on the BBC's move to Salford Quays as well as on the new Future Media initiative - Connected Studio - which has a fund of up to £1Million available to invest in both early stage concepts and pilots. Also in this talk, Ian Forrester launches the first operational prototype of the Perceptive Radio. Ian's current research is into the area of Future Narrative and Storytelling, with a technology he calls Perceptive Media. Perceptive Media aims to mash broadcast technologies with personal electronics and the Internet in order to create a more visceral and compelling experience. The Perceptive Radio is it's first physical manifestation. His demo got worldwide coverage via BBC News and The Next Web among many other outlets. Ian was one of the first BBC employees to make the leap from London to Manchester, where he works for the BBC's R&D north lab. The Thinking Digital Conference showcases exceptional talent from the worlds of technology, science, business, media and the arts. The Guardian, Metro Newspaper, The Next Web and Microsoft's Chief Storyteller have all described the Thinking Digital experience as being similar to a UK version of the highly prestigious TED Conference.               The Hive is a web2.0, showcasing tool for creative people and students. This presentation is all about it and was presented and showcased at the IMAE-2010 event at the Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester centre on the evening of Dec 7th 2010. The crowd and installations filled the room and attendees made merry with festive cheer and interacted with the installations. People also participated virtually by tweeting, interacting with people remotely in the virtual world of Second Life and left voice messages using Ipadio.

                ScreenLab 0x02 invited 3 international artists to the University of Salford to prototype new works, explore new canvases of perception and interaction at the intersection of arts and technology. AETHER Kyle McDonald and Joanie Lemercier Octave Virtual Reality Suite, Newton Building, University of Salford French visual artist Joanie Lemercier and Brooklyn based media artist Kyle McDonald are the first artists to be invited to create work using the ‘Octave’, Virtual Reality suite. GATEWAY and PORTALS Joel Gethin Lewis MediaCityUK Interactive artist and designer, Joel Gethin Lewis, is fascinated by the play of light in dark spaces, the use of strong contrasts between light and dark and cityscapes of Bladerunner. Inspired by the use of light in the photography of Philip-Lorca di Corcia, the chiaroscuro techniques of renaissance painting and at the same time the atmospheric films of Ridley Scott, Gethin Lewis worked with photographer Richard Meftah to explore low light photography techniques.
