Steve Savant is a national insurance columnist, financial color commentator and host of the daily Internet talk show, The Business Insurance Zone. Eric Palmer sits in for Steve Savant as host with special guest Ken Davis, CLU, ChFC, CFP, CPA. Ken exposes the back door taxation on seniors that can only be described as invisible & insidious. One way for seniors to fight back is the proper use of annuities in their overall financial plan. Ken does an excellent job in managing adjusted gross income or AGI by using annuities. The new income mantra is "net spendable income - all in." On Monday’s Show, Eric and Ken introduce the real tax bracket effect. How does a taxpayer in a marginal Federal income tax bracket end up paying 42% in Taxes on interest income? You can order any of those at thebiz@brokersalliance.com or 1 800 290 7226 extension 147. Adjusted gross income can affect the use of exemptions, deductions and Medicare premiums. Modified adjusted gross income can affect the taxation on social security benefits. On the 1040 Federal Tax line 20(a) line itemizes Social Security income. Line 20(b) itemizes the portion exposed to ordinary income tax. From 1938 to 1983 Social Security income was not taxable at all. Then Congress decided to tax up to 50% of Social Security income. They liked that so much they upped the maximum to 85%. Your clients may very well not know this. It surprises many people. And retirees can get very angry about the fact that their Social Security income is taxed. More insidious is that the formula that causes this to happen adds in half of your Social Security income to the calculation. And, get this, municipal bond interest, which is touted as “tax free”, gets added into the equation as well. And the drum roll please for the most subtle of all back door taxation, capital gains are included in the formula at 100% of the gain; not 15%. This is because the capital gain tax is 15% on the gain but the total gain flows through the tax return for all other calculation including the taxation of Social Security income. Additional information about the Medicare premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance rates for 2012 is available in the October 27, 2011 Fact Sheet titled, "Medicare Premiums and Deductibles for 2012" on the www.cms.gov website.
