Meet the Author: Mary Lou Judd Carpenter Miriam was born in 1904 in India to missionary parents, who were working with the YMCA in Calcutta. The family traveled back to the United States in 1912 to settle in Montclair, New Jersey. Graduating from Montclair High School in 1921, she then attended Mount Holyoke College, graduating with the Class of 1925. Miriam’s Words, a collection of the letters of Miriam Judd, wife of long-serving Minnesota congressman, Walter Judd, is the first-person account of someone who had a ringside seat on some of the most interesting history of the twentieth century. Join us as Miriam’s daughter, Mary Lou Carpenter, brings her mother’s letters and times to life once more. Miriam Barber Judd was raised to serve humanity in the mission field, but she spent much of her life in the midst of the Washington D.C. political and social scene. There she tried to raise three daughters and maintain a normal family life during her husband’s necessary but all-too-frequent absences. Around her the world was changing as America grew from war-time victor to world power, and Miriam’s letters are as much a reflection of those fascinating times as a portrait of a strong, vibrant Minnesota woman.
