    • A Refugees's Tale: Habib

© Jason N. Parkinson/reportdigital.co.uk HD footage available from www.reportdigital.co.uk. Filmed 15/10/2009: I met Habib while working on a story of the Calais migrants for Associated Press. It was a month after the police had cleared the Jungle camp and some 500 refugees were living rough on the streets, living under the bridges to shelter from the increasingly bad weather. Habib did not want to be identified, as this could hamper his chances of seeking asylum in the UK. His story tells of working as a translator for coalition forces in Afghanistan but when US forces attacked his home village and killed 47 people, including some of his relatives, the villagers blamed him for the attack. They killed his colleague and he had to flee the country. © Jason N. Parkinson/reportdigital.co.uk HD footage available from www.reportdigital.co.uk. • A Miafiori Immigrant Story by Dan Halter (Turin, Italy 2014 9 Urban Biotopes)

Nine Urban Biotopes (9UB) is an international, socially engaged art project delivering artistic research and cultural exchange. It does this both within and among social citizen and art initiatives in cities in South Africa and Europe in 2014. As part of 9UB I spent 3 months in Mirafiori in Turin, Italy. Mirafiori is an area with a history of immigration, with Italians coming from the south to work at the Fiat factory since the 1950s. These Terroni (a derogatory term, meaning people of the land) came from the countryside and were now accommodated in large apartment blocks, denying them their links to the land. This identity and their agricultural roots soon became manifest in the form of illegal garden allotments that sprung up around Mirafiori. Since then the area has undergone some urban regeneration, certain gardeners have been given authorized garden allotments and Colonnetti Park has been made into a safe green space for the residents of the area. Now the financial crisis is now testing the resilience of these immigrants and gardening for sustenance is proving to be a possible way forward. Also in the intervening years other immigrants have moved into the neighborhood, notably from the East of Europe, Asia and Africa. The Roma people also form a presence, albeit one that is barely tolerated. My project concerned workshops with the community where we planted vegetable seeds in planter-trays. These were then nurtured until they were big enough to re-plant. Some people from the community then helped to make a video with the plants telling a story of immigration in Mirafiori.

Almost every morning she wakes up with the next phone call, whether from a mother travelling with several children or a boatful of migrants in distress at sea with satellite phones in hand. From the inception of their treacherous journey crossing the Mediterranean Sea to their onward travel to Italy and further into the heart of Europe, she guides them. Amid the chaos, she is often their only confidante. “When they contact me before they start, I tell them that I cannot condone that they take to the sea — whether from the humanitarian, legal or ethical perspective,” Ms Soufi says. But knowing that they will continue to come hundreds at a time, vulnerable to deception and trafficking, she has been unable to stop helping them. www.thenational.ae/world/europe/the-guardian-angel-guiding-migrants-after-perilous-crossing
