On 11-11-11, Veteran's Day, a basketball court assembled on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson for the Carrier Classic basketball game. But the action on the hardwood between Michigan State and North Carolina is no comparison to the teamwork that's seen here on any given day. Project page: http://www.christianschmeer.com/Malaise-2013/ Malaise (2013) is a non-narrative documentary short film exploring Beelitz-Heilstätten. Built from 1898 as a sanatorium to care for victims of tuberculosis its intended use soon became distorted, serving as a German military hospital during World War 1 and 2, and Soviet military hospital after World War 2. Prominent historical figures recuperated in the hospital, notably; Adolf Hitler, after being wounded at the Battle of Somme during WW1, as well as Erich Honecker following his dismissal as the head of the East German government. In 1989, the grounds became the scene of 6 murders as necrophilic serial killer Wolfgang Schmidt, also known as "The Beast of Beelitz", terrorised the area. Once considered amongst the most advanced hospitals in Europe, Beelitz-Heilstätten has been abandoned and left to dilapidate due to discrepancies over ownership. Counting more than 60 buildings spread over 200 acres, linked via underground tunnels, Malaise delves into a small fraction of the "healing town", but attempts to convey its unsettling atmosphere through a distinct, yet delicate treatment of colours and tones. The film amalgamates subtle camera movements with still images and sound. This film was screened at: • Magnum Print Room, London (England) • Fantadia Festival Internazionale di Multivisione, Asolo (Italy) • Cinematique, London (England) • Aesthetica Short Film Festival, York (England) • Regensburg Short Film Week, Regensburg (Germany) • Glasgow Short Film Festival, Glasgow (Scotland) PLEASE NOTE: I activated the download function for playback quality purposes ONLY. Footage I shot of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan 2008 on the RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera. I edited this piece together (using some footage from my previous Afghanistan clips) as a demo to show the capabilities of this new technology, and how it can bring quality, scalability, and longevity back to combat zone footage unseen since WWII/Viet Nam era. The actual resolution of the footage is 4096x2048, almost 5x full 1080P High Definition. I only had the camera for 5 days of shooting, and this is what I pieced together for concept presentation purposes. It is my hope that the DoD shows interest in assembling a specially trained team of service-members to film on this new equipment and provide footage to disseminate back to the public at a quality this generation deserves, both home and abroad. Jason Wingrove of FXGuide recently interviewed me regarding this footage and my thoughts on advancing this quality for Combat Zone acquisition. It is episode #015 here: http://www.fxguide.com/therc/red_centre_015/ There have been a couple magazine articles as well, High Definition #31 (Aug08), Government Video (Aug08) and Videography magazines (Aug08), and DV Magazine (Sep08). when the cinema side of stillmotion first started, the goal was to get into documentary work. both Amina and i were in university for psychology and that background inspired us to ask questions and look at different perspectives. while we didn't know it at the time, our entire approach to weddings slowly took the shape and direction of what originally got us into this industry. weddings, to us, are not about the day. our films are about people; their stories, motivation, experience, and perspective. it is somewhat ironic to look at back at things, look at the path we have taken, and realize that weddings were in many ways the vehicle that taught us so much about what we do and brought us face to face with some unbelievable projects. here we are, some five or so years later, and we have embarked on our first feature length documentary with the CBS and Showtime sports. we have over 100 shoot days in total, many of which have come and gone in the past several months, and all of which will culminate with the Army vs. Navy game this December 10th. A Game of Honor follows the lives of both the Army and Navy for an entire season. while the story builds and follows a football season, the characters and narrative are so much more than football. we are so excited to be working with the CBS team of Stephen Karasik and Pete Radovich who are producing and directing the feature. a project of this size means hours upon hours of footage and needs a team that can filter through all of the noise and extract different threads that illuminate so many interesting things we have witnessed or heard over our first 80 or so shoot days. we are very humbled and proud to be a part of this team and collaborate on such an exciting project. we got into this to tell stories and A Game of Honor is allowing us to take the viewers to places and moments beyond belief. A Game of Honor airs on showtime Wed December 21st. All footage shown here is property of Showtime Sports and we want to thank them for allowing us to share this with all of you here. P.
