Are you hungry right now? It's a question most people ask themselves at least three times a day, if not more. However, many people hesitate before answering this routine question. It's not easy to determine if you are really physically hungry or not. In fact, it can be downright frustrating. Why is it so hard? Dr. Susan Albers, a clinical psychologist and author, explores this question in detail throughout her new book, EatQ: Unlock the Weight Loss Power of Emotional Intelligence (HaperOne, 2013). Dr. Albers discusses five factors (social eating, pleasure eating, dieting, distress and stress) that create a "smoke and mirrors effect" that makes you think you are physically hungry when you are not.

The sustained application of Buddhist loving-kindness meditation for the development of care, empathy and compassion for oneself and others, serves purposes both to enhance interpersonal skills and as a motivational force in mindful eating. TCME is delighted to welcome Uffe Damborg, Danish Clinical Psychologist, Cognitive Behavioral Therapist and Mindfulness Teacher to present "Eating with Loving Kindness." (July 2015) This program addresses all degrees of overeating, and even severe levels of binge eating. The program sees the effects of existential stress as primary causes of troubled eating patterns. Accordingly, a person with a weight and overeating problem must 1) unlearn the problematic pattern through the cultivation of full presence with the natural inner hunger and satiety regulation when eating; and 2) by the same motivation learn a healthier and more effective way of managing stress instead of abusing food. Both skills are the outcome of the very simple but not so easy practice of mindful eating awareness. The approach in this program however, is informed by very structured sequences of Buddhist insight and breathing meditation in order to deepen the therapeutic effect of informal mindful eating awareness. The heightened awareness of the enjoyment of eating is experienced as a weight regulating reward throughout the program. The sustained application of Buddhist loving-kindness meditation for the development of care, empathy and compassion for oneself and others, serves purposes both to enhance interpersonal skills and as a motivational force in mindful eating. You will learn how: 1) To apply very structured mindfulness strategies to avoid the pitfalls of mindless eating. 2) To cultivate the intention of self-care, self-empathy and self-compassion in order to deal with eating problems. 3) To cultivate enjoyment of eating as a important weight loss condition. Uffe Damborg is a Danish Clinical Psychologist, Cognitive Behavioral Therapist and Mindfulness Teacher, (both secular and spiritual), who teaches at Buddhist retreats in Scandinavia. In collaboration with Nutritionist and Weight Loss Counselor Per Brændgaard, Uffe has been implementing mindful eating practices in the National health sector since 2007. Their very structured approach to mindful eating is the topic of this book: Mindful Eating Awareness: Weight Loss with Wisdom. The English version was published in 2014. Both Uffe and Per have worked with mindful eating in individual consultations, group-based courses, lectures and through the media. Uffe has spent 8 years as a lay practitioner in Buddhist meditation monasteries in South Asia, the home of mindfulness, that adds a special flavor to his way of integrating mindful eating into Western psychology. He loves reading, writing and meditative gardening at his summer house in Southern Sweden. www.mindfuleatingawareness.org
