1. "Cartography of Ashes" - The Legacy of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire

    from Dolissa Medina Added

“Cartography of Ashes” was a 45-minute poetic documentary and public film event. Created with the cooperation of the San Francisco Fire Department and narrated by Bay Area firefighters, the film combines oral history, folklore, journalism, and experimental storytelling to recount tales from the great firestorm that destroyed San Francisco in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake. Completed in April 2006 for the 100th anniversary of the disaster, “Cartography” made its world premiere as a site-specific outdoor film screening on the wall of a fire station in the city’s Mission District on April 21, 2006.

24th/Mission, Mission District, San Francisco In this outdoor dance event, the performers blend in and out of the crowd and passersby are invited to join in, drawing attention to the everyday encounters and movement of people through the site that creates a shifting lightscape beginning at dusk and continuing through nightfall. Created by choreographer Sello Pesa, conceptual artist Vaughn Sadie, and the Ntsoana Contemporary Dance Theatre, a collaborative dedicated to exploring sociopolitical concepts through movement, Inhabitant was first performed in Johannesburg at the border of a developing arts district called Maboneng. Conceived for an urban space charged with shifting economies and changing demographics, here it plays out on the streets of the Mission District. Some years ago I was walking at night with a friend in the Mission District of San Francisco. There was a homeless guy selling stuff on the sidewalk on 16th. I saw this reel to reel tape recorder and bought it for five dollars. I bought batteries for it and when I played it I was floored by what was on it. It's his family sometime in the early sixties opening presents on Christmas day. He's the little boy in the recording. In the background a radio is playing Christmas music from KABL the once powerful San Francisco AM radio station. It's a peek into a Christmas long ago. The visual doesn't change but I found it a very interesting listen.
