      • SSU-2015-03-10: Philip as Missionary

Study 10 of 13 on Biblical Missionaries ““Philip. A friend of horses. Seriously. That’s the meaning of the name. I should know because that’s my name.” But Phillip in the Bible was more than just his name. He was the one who…when confronted with bias and prejudice didn’t argue his point…he just said “Come and see.” It was more about introducing God than defending him. He was the kind of missionary that would go where God wanted and meet a foreigner just to share the gospel knowing the Holy Spirit would do the baptizing. Philip. A friend of horses…perhaps…but a true friend of the goodness that is Jesus.” –Falvo Fowler Scriptural Basis: Acts 2:44–47; 4:34–37; 6:1–7; 8; 21:7–10; 2 Cor. 4:18. Key Text: “‘You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth’” (Acts 1:8, NIV). 1. What would you say are the primary lessons we may take away from a study of the life and ministry of Philip? 2. The early church was growing, but what happened as reported in Acts 6 that clearly showed they were still fallible human beings? 3. Philip was the father of four daughters. How should we balance our priority to care for our family and the call to devote time to mission and service? 4. In what ways does effective mission require us to be as knowledgeable about the people we’re trying to reach as the message we’re trying to communicate? 5. For the first-century Christians, the ends of the earth meant geographically distant to Jerusalem. What are our equivalent ends of the earth today? 6. What practical steps could we take toward overcoming our fears and putting aside distractions to become more open to outreach and witness?

We have been blessed to be sponsors for children in the Dominican Republic through the mission group ASON International. Sponsorship enables children to attend Adonai, the Christian school, in Santo Domingo North. $35 a month provides for the school expenses, uniform, summer camp, and a Christmas basket. Please consider being a part of somebody else's story by being a sponsor and/or taking part in a short-term mission trip such as the one in this video. More information, on making a difference in a child's life, can be found at ason.org. You are blessed when you are blessing others!
