          Robert Gilmer, a Louisiana native, recently received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, where his research has focused on American Indian and environmental history. He has taught courses on American Indian history, Treaty Rights and Natural Resources, and, in the fall of 2010, the Gulf Oil Spill. Here he talks to Peter Shea about the flooding of the Mississippi River in April and May of 2011. Shea, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, is the director and producer of the Bat of Minerva, an interview show that frequently features guests of the University of Minnesota's Institute for Advanced Study.

Dozen of other refugees who were staying in campers and RV's nearby visited the shelter for meals. Hale became a Red Cross volunteer after surviving cancer.
