Wouldn’t it be great if you could adapt appearance and behavior of your digital working environment to your current tasks through a few clicks? Of course customized to your personal needs and preferences, possibly including recommendations and suitable advice. This is a dream of the future, especially for elaborate software development environments. Integrated ALM platforms nevertheless open up new perspectives for customization. We present how to raise workflow automation from coding to the modeling level. In our talk we illustrate the design of a graphical DSL for Microsoft TFS process templates. We explain the methodical approach, the selection of the modeling tool, and the design decisions that took the project to success. Complemented by code and document generators, model-based ALM takes the hassle out of design and maintenance of individual customer solutions. We demonstrate the new degrees of freedom by means of a realistic and an experimental scenario.

          • Understanding the Simulation of Mobility Models

ISR Distinguished Lecturer Series Understanding the simulation of mobility models Jean-Yves Le Boudec Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) Lausanne, Switzerland Abstract The simulation of mobility models often causes problems due to long transients or even lack of convergence to a stationary regime ("The random waypoint model considered harmful"). To analyze this, we define a formally sound framework, which we call the random trip model. The framework is a generic mobility model for independent mobiles that contains as special cases: the random waypoint on convex or non convex domains, random walk, billiards, city section, space graph and other models. We use Palm calculus to study the model and give a necessary and sufficient condition for a stationary regime to exist. When this condition is satisfied, we compute the stationary regime and give an algorithm to start a simulation in steady state (perfect simulation). The algorithm does not require knowledge of geometric constants. For the special case of random waypoint, we provide for the first time a proof and a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a stationary regime. Further, we extend its applicability to a broad class of nonconvex and multi-site examples, and provide a ready-to-use algorithm for perfect simulation. For the special case of random walks or billiards, we show that, in the stationary regime, the mobile location is uniformly distributed and is independent of the speed vector, and that there is no speed decay. Our framework provides a rich set of well understood models that can be used to simulate mobile networks with independent node movements. Our perfect sampling is implemented to use with ns-2, and it is freely available to download. We lastly discuss how random trip mobility model accommodates various mobility properties (some of which may be invariants of real-world mobility), such as, for example, recent empirical evidence that the distribution of human inter-contact times are heavy-tailed, long-range dependent models and their implications on simulation averaging, and parameter settings of node mobility to achieve a target time-stationary distribution of node location. Biography Jean-Yves Le Boudec is full professor at EPFL, Fellow of the IEEE and Director of the Institute of Communication Systems. He graduated from Ecole Normale Superieure de Saint-Cloud, Paris, where he obtained the Agregation in Mathematics in 1980 (rank 4) and received his doctorate in 1984 from the University of Rennes, France. From 1984 to 1987 he was with INSA/IRISA, Rennes. In 1987 he joined Bell Northern Research, Ottawa, Canada, as a member of scientific staff. In 1988, he joined the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory where he was manager of the Customer Premises Network Department. He joined EPFL as Associate Professor in 1994. His interests are in the performance and architecture of communication systems. He co-authored the book Network Calculus (Springer, 2006). He received the Infocom 2005 Best Paper Award with Milan Vojnovic of Microsoft Research for elucidating the perfect simulation and stationarity of mobility models. He is or has been on the program committee or editorial board of many conferences and journals, including Sigcomm, Sigmetrics, Infocom, Performance Evaluation and ACM/IEEE Transactions on Networking. • Transportation Sustainability: What can Intelligent Transportation Systems Offer?

                    from CESCA Center / Added

                    42 Plays / / 0 Comments

Abstract: The transportation sector consumes around 100 quadrillion BTUs of energy worldwide [was 96 quad in 2011 according to the IEA, and the sector is only growing], which is mostly petroleum-based products including gasoline and diesel fuels. More than 7 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions [7 Gt CO2 is the value for 2011 according to the IEA] are also attributed to the transportation sector, and represent about 20% of the total CO2 emissions from fuel combustion. However, it would be difficult to imagine our modern life without motorized transportation. Alternative transportation energy sources such as hybrid-electric technologies, bio-ethanol, and hydrogen fuel cells are emerging and are being broadly investigated as replacements for the conventional internal combustion engine. However, these new alternatives have not been able to replace petroleum-powered engines because of challenges that relate to availability, cost, convenience, lack of technology, and accessibility. Consequently, there is a need to improve the efficiency of travel in urban and rural areas. One of the key strategies to improving vehicle fuel efficiency is obtaining more miles from each liter or gallon of fuel. The presentation will highlight some of the research being conducted at the Center for Sustainable Mobility at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute to use Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology to achieve these goals. The presentation will highlight the work on (1) developing vehicle fuel consumption and emission models that can be calibrated using publically available data; (2) studying the impact of driver routing decisions on their fuel consumption level; (3) developing eco-routing systems that minimize the fuel consumption and carbon footprint of urban transportation networks; (4) developing intelligent eco-cruise control and adaptive cruise control systems; (5) sharing and receiving information with traffic signal controllers to reduce vehicle fuel consumption levels in the vicinity of traffic signalized intersections; and (6) developing novel autonomous vehicle control systems at intersections to reduce vehicle delays and fuel consumption levels. Speaker: Dr. Rakha is the Samuel Reynolds Pritchard Professor of Engineering in the Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, a Courtesy Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Director of the Center for Sustainable Mobility (CSM) at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI). He is a Professional Engineer in Ontario and a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He is on the Editorial Board of the Transportation Letters: The International Journal of Transportation Research, IET Intelligent Transport Systems Journal, and the International Journal of Transportation Science and Technology. In addition, he is an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions of Intelligent Transportation Systems and the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems: Technology, Planning and Operations. Dr. Rakha's areas of research include traffic flow theory, traveler and driver behavior modeling, dynamic traffic assignment, traffic control, use of artificial intelligence in transportation, intelligent vehicle systems, connected and autonomous vehicles, transportation energy and environmental modeling, and transportation safety modeling.
