This video is part of a project to illustrate the cultural landscape concepts of JB Jackson. Jackson contends that the importance of landscape is not so much how we perceive it as how we use it. He suggests that landscape is both understood and enhanced by human interaction. According to Jackson cultural landscape includes those structures created by people for their use and habitation. Jackson is quoted as having said that a landscape with people in it is more beautiful than one without. I attempt to make his point by the two back-to-back scenes at the end. One is a well-composed image of an empty swimming pool. At first it appears to be pleasant to gaze upon, as in the Hoskin tradition. But after a very few seconds it the viewer is impatient to know when it will go away and something else take its place. A clip of someone climbing a wall, the simple act of which captures the viewer’s interest and imagination, follows it immediately. After all, the most interesting thing to people is people.

The eye/land tension in landscape refers to the influence of perception on the definition of landscape. Is landscape factual, objective, and definable? Or is landscape individual, subjective, and imaginative? I would argue that the definition of landscape includes what we think of it and how we perceive it. To illustrate this, I filmed a park in Monmouth, OR, using different images to show some of the different facets of a public park: a quiet nature preserve, a space where humans have shaped and confined nature, a dirty place filled with litter, or a scary place filled with "hooligans". Enjoy.
