An 18 month study focused on the Impact of Trails in the Central Ohio region has been released by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC). MORPC and local governments recognized that there was a need for better data and education tools related to trail development in Central Ohio. The goal of the Study was to provide a report on the value of trails to inform and educate our local business community, developers, government decision makers, and residents. The study obtained objective data in four areas: trail usage, trail user profiles and feedback; costs analysis (capital and operation and maintenance), and property value analyses along trails. The study was a collaborative effort between: MORPC, Metro Parks, the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association (OPRA), Rails to Trails Conservancy, and the Cities of Canal Winchester, Columbus, Hilliard, New Albany, and Westerville. The study focused on three central tasks: trail usage, trail user surveys and property value analyses along trails. Representatives from these partners served on the study’s advisory body. MORPC served as the project manager and hired the University of Minnesota, a nationally recognized expert in the areas of trails usage analysis and benefits, to conduct the study.
