This tutorial covers a few basic techniques for using Newton which I learned while animating the cutscenes for the game BattleBlock Theater. This tutorial covers: -Creating masks to serve as "ball and socket" joints. -Throwing objects in Newton using kinematic layers. -Using masks to add physics simulations to overlapping layers. -Basics for using joints in Newton 2 For more information on Newton go to http://www.motionboutique.com/newton For more information on BattleBlock Theater go to http://www.battleblocktheater.com

This is an animation I did as part of a series of video podcasts included in an ePub called "TeachHub Magazine" available on the App Store. This is the style utilized for the first 10 episodes, revolving around the "whiteboard" look. Illustrations are first done in Adobe Illustrator, then animated in After Effects for motion and comped with green screen footage of the illustrator's hand to appear as though they are being drawn on screen. Motion Boutique's Newton 2 was used for a few gravity based motion animations, but for the most part, this is all done with basic transform keyframes in After Effects. The compositing is done with very tedious and painstaking rotoscoping, frame by frame.

This is the first of a new series of Podcast animations I do for an ePub called "TeachHub Magazine" that's available on the App Store. This one took a LONG time. As I do more though, the process will become much more streamlined and I should be able to cut my animation time in half. This one was done using shape layers in After Effects, generated from Ai files. I used the plugin "Newton 2" by Motion Boutique for a few scenes, but for the most part, the animation is all native to After Effects.

More car rig testing in After Effects. Motion Boutique's physics plugin Newton, drives this animation. The rig is robust and can handle quite a bit of physics and obstacles. More to come...

A short film introducing IPC Content, a new branded content strategy from IPC Media. I worked directly with the team at IPC to develop and design this before animating it. We worked especially hard to create a narrative and visual structure that didn’t rely on stats or sales figures or even previous IPC content, allowing for a fresh and engaging piece of content in itself. This will be used by IPC to lead presentations and pitches to media partners and major brands. UPDATE: I've since made a new film for IPC to complement this one: https://vimeo.com/92278591 http://mattsimmonds.tv

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
